AFAIK...there are no apple stores in India and for iphone's sold in India; warranty is covered by the provider.
So any phones bought from outside cannot be sent to...say vodaphone or airtel.
I had the same dilemma and had asked the apple store ppl in Australia but they were not able to give me a straight answer

Pretty sure on that. Apple provides international warranty to a majority of devices minus the iPhone. Not sure of this but no phone manufacturer other than HTC, provides international warranty.
Someone correct me if I am wrong though.

Alright. Will update the main post.
When I tried to check its warranty online it says:
"Please activate your iPhone
We are unable to display coverage details because your iPhone has not been activated.
Please contact your iPhone retailer or wireless carrier to activate your iPhone."

PS. I would consider it safe saying that no warranty is available in India.

There are apple stores in Delhi atleast which sell genuine apple products including the 4s with Apple India warranty. Further, Apple has a replacement warranty on all its devices which means if something goes wrong, they just hand you a refurb piece in lieu as a replacement. Only the Iphones bought from outside India are not covered "officially" in India but I have known some people who have got their faulty 4 replaced through Apple India with a little persuasion.

The stores you are talking about are actually owned by resellers. An 'official' Apple store is yet to open in India. None of these stores will service/replace an iPhone purchased outside of India. iPhone is the only product which comes with national warranty. An iPad purchased in US for example, will however be serviced/replaced in India.

Warranty on iPhones are offered by the respective carriers. For e.g I bought my iPhone from AirCel so my fone's warranty process is done by aircel. If i sell to someone in US, then AT&T is not authorized to offer warranty on an aircel iphone.
Same way, whatever was the location of purchase of this phone, its warranty can be claimed in that country only.
Global warranty applies ONLY to iPods, iPads & MacBooks

actually, its not a matter that who "SOLD", but in any country, iPhones come ONLY thru carries.
Each and every iPhone in the whole world, has a carrier name attached to it.
not like our regular nokias and samsing.

Wrong in many countries it is sold Factory Unlocked , get ur facts right.
iPhones do have international warranty provided its factory unlocked and Apple has a online store in that country selling same phone.
I had got my iphone 4 from HK the warranty was valid in NZ as in both countries Apple has online store selling FU phones. I have confirmed this from Apple NZ manager , pray our gob(v)erment passes FDI bill and Apple starts selling directly.
I have tried talking to alteast 15 different Apple customer service agents in India to replace a iphone purchased in Singapore all they say is no warranty.
@OP with serial number Apple can tell where it was purchased. The online warranty might say it is valid but its for the country the phone was purchased in and not in India.

I'm sorry but; starting with US itself an unlocked phone can be bought from the apple store. The 4S being $650 right now.spawnfreak said:

Just for the info , I had purchased my iPhone 4 from Singapore through official Apple store online . The Apple website shows valid warranty information just like Chaztins phone but when I tried to get it serviced /replaced due to a non working camera Apple India denied the warranty claim saying I will have to get replaced from Apple Singpore only . Since Apple does not have a single official Apple store in India they do not honour warranty for internstional iPhones . Even the factory unlocked non carrier based iPhones sold at the Apple stores are actually franchise / enterprise owned Apple stores like - Maple Technologies etc

Just google the model No. and you'll know what carrier it comes from.
My iPhone 4 is FU and is from AirCel. My Dad's iPhone 4 is FU and is from 3, HK and he tried to get his iPhone checked in the malaysia (reg. low sound output), and they refused to look at it as its warranty can b claimed only in HK

I know what the store page looks like, but DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR. Just google your iPhone's Model No. (Find it in Settings->about.. smthing like MC6XXXX) and you'll know what carrier it comes from. Even my phone is FU and I bought from iStore (authorized reseller) BUT upon googling its model no. it shows as AIRCEL iPhone 4.
Associated with carrier doesnt mean that its under any contract etc All GSM iPhone in US are via AT&T even if FU

I have email from apple to prove that international warranty is valid for factory unlocked phones in India .
For the record apples stores are going to open shortly since the reliance digital stores din't provided the *apple Level services*
