News Apple M1 5nm chip launched for macbook air and pro 13 inch

So yesterday got call from Aptronix that they got the M1 Air and since I had pre booked by paying 1K, they asked me to get it. Had to decline since the hdfc offer has expired already.

And also have ordered from apple india using student discount (hopefully no issues) and delivery date is between 9 - 16 January.

I want to see how much of an improvement the mini-led display would come up with. the current one has really bad contrast ratio and it's evident while watching movies/videos with dark scenes. maybe the effect is exaggerated as I'm used to amoled displays.
 
For people in Mumbai, it appears that M1 Air is in stock as I got calls from Aptronix and Unicorn. The HDFC offers seems to be still on I guess as Aptronix told me it is (didn't ask Unicorn) and the below website too says it is there.

Is the Mini in stock anywhere other than Apple?
Very tempted to get that as well but the 3 week wait period on the Apple site is making me hold off

Ok seems the Air M1 is not yet available but some stores are saying that will get over weekend. So I am not cancelling my booking with aptronix and it appears that the cashback is still there.
 
It's 10% for MacBooks, iPads and Mac Mini
I believe the HDFC offer has expired as it doesn't show on their offers portal anymore - but HDFC is really bad in terms of updating said portal so it is possible that it still exists.
I'd say it's a tossup between the HDFC offer and the education store if the former is still available and the latter involves asking someone else for help/favor- considering the price differential is small and the former also gets you free EMI..

The mini is the exception though - as there is no major CB on it - nor there ever was as far as I remember
OTOH MBP/MBA/iPad keep getting HDFC/ICICI or sometimes Amex CB offers every now & then...

And just in case anyone is sitting on the fence regarding the M1 - I sold off my 1 year old MBP with extended 3 yr warranty at almost 50% of the price - which is the worst depreciation I have taken on an apple product ever...
Yet am so stoked after using it for a week or so - that I have now sold off my desktop to replace it with a mini ..
The new architecture is seriously that good and I couldn't resist getting rid of x64 on the desktop too :)

Very Simple workloads
Browser (lot of tabs), outlook/zoom/teams, excel (not too heavy), word etc.

As for the second part, I guess I have been at this for long enough to not give a rat’s a$$ for any kind of benchmarks any more :tearsofjoy:
The difference for me has been purely on account of other things.

1) Zero delay resume each time (although Intel macs too never took more than a few seconds)

2) The general zippiness is more than noticeable . Also given the current gap between other systems and this, the performance should remain adequate for a fairly long time (while apps get heavier over the years, they still need to in line with the average system performance )

3) The battery life is actually better than what I had hoped (which was high to begin with).. I never used to get the review quoted battery life on any laptop i have brought... possibly due to the short bursty nature of the workload above with a lot of alt-tab (cmd-tab).. This one actually goes higher than what the reviews say


4) The heat, or rather the lack of it. The system remains cold (uncomfortably so) even under fair amount of multitasking while on long video calls .

This part is speculative but the general longevity of iphone/ipad logic boards (very rare to hear of a failure on those ) coupled with 3 and 4 above should mean that the device should have a good life..
Add (2) to it and I have a feeling this should comfortably last long with good usability

I guess the x86 platform could go the way of the IBM mainframes unless they innovate in some way.

Personally I am looking forward to my next computer upgrade in a few years to see how the landscape turns out.

I second every point. It's astonishing. especially coming from an older 2015 mbp.

I haven’t seen his videos but here is my relatively unbiased take...
Mac 2016 onwards have had failures pertaining to the logic board that I have heard of ..
All my older Macs have lasted me 4+ years after which I have sold them but the last one (MBP 2019) wasn't very confidence inspiring ..
Primarily due to the way it used to heat up - which I am sure cannot be good for the internal electronics..

iPads/ iPhones are a different story altogther - logic board failure on iPads / iphones is rare AFAIK if not unheard of..
There are some really old iOS devices in my storage - which still turn on
My supposition is that the M1s should (hopefully) turn out the same way
