The new iPhone 5 was reported to be facing quality issues in which the anodized aluminium gets scratched off and gets scuffs easily revealing the color underneath . Some customers had even reported their units to be scratched right out of the box .

Now an email response from Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller has revealed what Apple has to say on the issue . Schiller responded:

"Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal."

So ,customers who are planning to get iPhone 5 should invest in a good case and keep their phones carefully.

Read that on 9to5mac. This company has so much high ego that they would be down one day only because of this. First it was "Holding it wrong" and now this.
I am damn sure that 1 year from now when iPhone 5 will come for sale on ebay and all, most listings will mention scratching of the surface (particularly in black / slate models).

only the dye/paint has worn out a bit. people should just colour those parts with a black marker pen.

ohh, i got so happy seeing this, i own a s3 and was really sad that iphone owners wouldn't have to deal with these kinda things..

damn you samsung & apple..

I think it is an Apple patent. Now next time a phone comes out with a metallic finish/body -and- flakes, get ready for more retarded law suits.

Even Nokia N8 and E7 have aluminium bodies but they dont come with scratches and scuffs out of the box, This is a serious design and manufacturing issue which cant be rectified by any software update. Apple should recall the faulty products, retool the supply chain and then provide the replacement phones.

Nokia already has aluminium body on some phones. :-) Agree with @RS4, I have personally used Phones with Aluminium and other metalic bodies. They do get scratched but not that quickly.

Fanboi will ignore it and listen to what Apple said. especially in india where availability is low and people are buying iPhone 5 for lac ruppees.

The first iPhone had an anodized Alu. back as well and although it was prone to scratches, it wouldn't be as evident compared to the new device since they come with a painted finish. A simple case will solve the issue. Any phone is prone to scratches no? And most of us would definitely invest in a decent case anyway if we were to spend so much money on a phone!

But Phil's attitude is grossly retarded, implying the customers to deal with it! :|

Mother of lord, now this is scary! Here's what a staff of TC had to say when he received his iPh 5:

My UPS guy stopped by an hour ago and delivered my phone. Here are the problems right out of the box: something is rattling around the bottom of the phone, there are dents on the back where the aluminum back meets the class parts at the top and bottom, there are a few small but noticeable scratches on the aluminum back, too, and there is a discolored part right above the ringer switch.
