Hey Hi,
Owing to the fact that Delhi will be really Hot this summer :S , I was planning to apply some Thermal paste (MX-2) on my HD3850,

Will it be beneficial and most importantly safe to do so ?

I own a Palit HD3850, The HSF is attached via a series of screws so shouldn't be a problem to remove.

If you are doing it properly, why would it be a problem? You're going to open-remove the fan connector-clean-apply-connect the fan connector and-close, but if you don't do it right, they would obviously be a problem.

Don't remove those thermal pads and if you do, just so that you know they do tear up pretty easily so take you.

Ok then will start, No touching/tearing thermal pads.

you mentioned cleaning, ill be using an alcohol swab to wipe of any previous residues, only on the chip (not on any PCB plastic as alcohol can damage plastics)

(Recently, did the same with my CPU chip)

PCB wont get damaged by alcohol. be sure it has least amount of water. 99% pure is the best for this purpose, coz only alc gets vaporized quickly. water or others fillers remain.

Thanks for the heads up just did it

The Temps now

its almost a 10-9 degree drop , my gpu would hover around 49-50 degrees on gen usage such as movies, will run 3D mark or something for a while before celebrating.

Job well done :)

Glad to see it worked without any problems ! those temps are very nice too.

Your card is now ready for the Delhi summer.

Some more pics of the clean up process and the nanga panga card would be awesome :P

Cheers and kind regards :)

I know, same case here

I use my cooler and right now it's humming away at LOW setting around 1.5 metres away from my cabinet.

Helps a lot, cuz my GPU load temp at 55% fan settings dropped from 77C to 65C while playing Anno 1404 (even CRYSIS loads upto 71C, Anno goes to 77C OMG :D )

Should one RE-TIM GPUs. Mine have been running since May last year. Cores are all right, but the memory temperatures on the 2nd one are crossing 100C during Furmark. I keep the fans for both on 80% - fixed while gaming. What should I do..?

When i checked on my HD 4850 before i upgraded it , i saw that mem chips didnt have any TIM on them... only GPU chip had TIM on it, maybe cleaning up the cooler on the GPU might help you more ?

^^

Do they not have just thermal pads, glued to them. How difficult is it to remove that darn red shell cover. Does it void warranty..?

Its certainly doesnt void the warranty (unless you have a sticker on the screw which says so), not sure about the 4890 but the 4850 didnt have any thermal pads and also it didnt have any contact with the heatsink.

total passive ... i suppose, never had any thermal issues with the 4850... if you see the above pics you can see it... the above cooler the heatsink fins just extend over the ram chips ... i have seen custom jobs were people add those chips on top of the memory chips...but that is provided your existing cooling unit allowing it.

can i use Deo Spray or after shave lotion as replacement for 99% alcohol

No I don't think that is a good idea.

You could go to a Local chemist and grab a few Alcohol Swabs, They have a very low water content and evaporate quickly, use them instead.

Some benching done :)

not really what id expected, But good none the less :), 72 max temp after running furmark for an hour @ 1440*900 ,also the test was run in the afternoon when its damn hot and with no AC/Cooler on (AC is kaput :( & i am pretty lazy at refilling water in the cooler :ashamed: ), Id say Pretty decent .
