Hi Folks,
I have noticed people having loads of HDD's(space) on their PC's.
I for one, am not having any use for even my 160GB HDD on my PC, most of time I have about 70-80 GB free on it
Reason because, I move all my stuffs to DVD's and store them safe.

I find this inconvenient but assured that data will be safe. If suppose, I have all data on HDD and if the HDD crashes and data not recoverable, i will stand to lose all data, rather a single DVD, if its not working
Also, DVD-backup is much cheaper than HDD backup ie price/GB
and I use 1st quality DVD for backup of important stuff

So, would like to know what option you use to backup all your games,movies, music,porn,etc...etc...etc.... :D

Also, please list out the pro's, why you find your option to be better.

i prefer HDD...

i dont lik multiple version of same stuff in different DVDs .
also lazy to manage all the DVDs :P
 
I store my dvds and cds quite well. I've got them in folders which I keep in a cool dry place..but 2 months ago, I found that all the CD's I'd burned over 4 yrs ago were spoilt. They were becoming unreadable. I managed to save most of them by copying everything to a spare hdd I had lying around, but some CD's took upto 30 mins to copy, and some were plain spoilt. They weren't scratched, and they weren't kept in the sun. CD's and DVD's just have a limited shelf life, no matter what people say. HDD's are the same..I doubt they'll last more than 7 yrs..still HDD's are bigger and more convenient.
 
write it in DVD's and give it out to all your friends. at least one copy of it will survive somewhere :D
 
Actually right now I am storing all my data on dvdr discs but within 2 yrs i will store all of my data on Blue ray dvdr discs bcoz Blue ray discs r really safe for storing coz they have a protective layer on the discs which helps it from getting scratches .. HDD r not safe since it can crash any time .. but yes i store all my data only on Verbatim & Taiyo yuden dvdr discs only bcoz they r the best

Thats what i never do...I will ask them to get their own media and copy from mine

If you lend, forget it. It will come back in super shape :ohyeah:

Tried tat once.... lost track whom i gav the DVDs to .. :D
also the DVD tat came bk were sand blasted :S
 
Hi Buddy....

It depends upon type of stuff. I tell you about my procedure...

I keep Game Setups, softwares & porn stuff on DVD.

Rest I keep in HDD. Also movies which I can watch anytime like 300 etc. I have kept on HDD...

But remember after 100+ CD-DVD it is hectic work to preserve them...

Very true, what u said
But labeling them properly and segregating them in diff storage will make life easier
 
and when u burn 100s of dvds to backup stuff.. use a dvd catlog software like win catlog ,all my movies ,collectorz etc etc it makes it very easier to search for stuff stored on the dvds.

thanx to XT for telling me about dvd/cd catlog softwares before that i use to type everything in MS word/notepad :rofl:
 
I generally backup files on DVD. Even though its multiple media to take care of, atleast its affordable enough to make multiple copies of the same disc.

Once blu-ray gets mainstream it will be the numero uno solution for backups, Unless ofcourse SSD's get remarkably cheaper within the next few years.

For important documents like office papers, college project files and others, it makes sense to have a copy of them in your email account. If the pc has a crash when you need it the most you can still retrieve the files from a cybercafe or someone else's computer. Likewise companies are now offeringonline backup space at reasonable prices.
Edit: Simple disc cataloger is a freeware alternative to disc catalog softwares.
 
i prefer dvd over hdd because i have had bad experience with hdds so now i store on multiple dvds

PS: i've had 3 hdd crashes in the past year(2007)
