i used a RAMSink to spread the paste on a FX5200 GPU...the chip aws large, got an even surface :D

Sorry..couldn't resist that..Sunny you made my day.....

No man..... I did NOT mean to say that you suggested this ... only included it in because I have heard of people "fingering" their AS onto the CPU :)
no it was not meant that way. it was for the benefit of members here. "public consumption" so to speak.

I use the rubber bulb available for 25/- at Lammy road for such jobs. Good directional air flow.
yes . these are good for cleaning microscopic dirt from small crevices etc, pin point accuracy .... used to use that on analogue circuits long time back on my tuners, amps etc.... but now everything has gone smd and digital ....except for the psu.

I read that the air flow from a Hair Dryer as well as the suction of a Vacuum Cleaner creates Static Electricty and this can do damage inside a computer. What do you think ?
if you are from mumbai then i dont think static should be a big problem due to the high relative humidity prevailing here.

the ic's and other parts mfg. process have anyways matured and the parts are robust enough to take the mild static onslaught from V/C and hair dryers.

The actual danger i visualise is from the extreme air flow rates "physically". meaning if the components are not soldered properly (cold joints, too less solder etc..) then these small smd parts can actually be blown or sucked away from the pcb. also the hot air from hair dryer / V.C. on a particular fixed spot for a reasonable long time will permanently alter the characteristics of that component.
if you take the above points into considerstion and always move the V.C. / hair dryer (constant motion, no lingering over a particular spot) then i dont think it should cause any problems.

We already have a candidate for that - good dude Sunny.

I use the Rubber Bulb mainly to clean the case fans and CPU fan and in between my Zalman 7000cu Heat Sinks fins. Use it along with a 1" soft paint brush.

You are in Cuffe Parade right ? I am at Churchgate behind the EROS Cinema. Last year I cleaned my dentists computer with a vacuum cleaner and the computer gave a lot of problems after that - he had to change his computer finally. I am sure it was a static electricity problem - his room is air conditioned full day so humidity levels are quite low. Around 45% - I know because like me he has a Hygrometer in his room.

Right.
Facing the oval ?? or the Ritz
What sort of problems.?? if you remember post about it so that it can be entered in our mental database for future references.

hey paint brush is ok for cleaning ? was thinking of getting one but was worried in case the bristles generate static

Ritz - opp Hundai Cars Show Room.

The computer problem ? ... keyboard not getting recognised - prob the I/O or whatever controls the Keyboard - the chip blew. He wanted to upgrade anyway so replaced computer and last month the guy asked me to again vacuum his computer - NO WAY HOSEY !!! RUN FOR THE HILLS !! He forced me into doing it and BANG computer would not start again - Display card was showing corruption on screen - removed display card cleaned contacts with my Staedler glass fibre pen and vacuumed and brushed AGP socket and display normal again. WHEW !!

Here is a picture of the Fibre Glass pen and a refill - the white part on the refill is actual glass fibre and it scraps contacts really clean. These are avalable at the stationers in Fort.

YUP you are right you have to be careful with static with brushes. I normally hold the brush by the bristles itself hoping that any static buildup will be sent down my fingers. :D

A friend of mine has a Anti Static brush made by a company StaticMaster - you lucky people with contacts in USA can ask for this - please dont forget who put you on to this and get me one too :D

i use those 2-inch wide paintbrush used to paint walls....

i always hold the brush using the bristles...not the handle, with no slippers...so no static problem :P

@ PCJ : Didnt get ya :S

I dunno abt u ppl but i don't even touch AS5 with my fingers. Just put a miniscule amount on the center of the heatspreader and mount the hsf. Then twist the hsf a little bit b4 putting on the clips to spread it. Gives me great temps ;)

THAT is exactly how I do it too .... hold brush from bristles with bare feet and touch case for static discarge.

Have you been watching me do it ?? :@

Am in Chennai. Can anyone tell me where to get Isopropyl Alcohol and Acetone ? Coz if am goona buy AS5 from deejay, am gonna need these 2 first. Or is there any other alternative ?
I was free so I looked around and came up with this page... Chennai Chemical suppliers are listed here... check them out....If they dont supply small quantities ask them where the retail chemical market in Chennai is located.

Ditto. i never touch or spread AS5 on the cpu / chip core.Since the heat from the core and the presuure from the heat sink will spread the AS5 at the correct places "naturally".
and twisting part is good and beneficial as it removes any remaining thin layer of air , which is a very good "insulator" and will spoil the effectiveness of the thermal compund.
However what i do is always put a little AS5 on the base of the heatsink, spead it thinly over the portion which will cover the actual core, and then lightly "remove" it with a tissue paper only, no liquid solutions. i leave enough of it so that a dark grey color is visible over that area.

But actually, isn't AS5 supposed to applied in a very small drop??? IT is not supposed to be spread right??? A small glob of AS 5 the size of an uncooked rice grain is supposed to be put in the centre of the proccy and then the heatsink is fitted directly and the heatsink is supposed to be rotated a little to make sure that all air escapes......

There is one thing I do during application of AS which no one has mentioned so far - maybe you people know about it already as I have mentioned it before at TA.

At the time of applying or removing AS5 I put 1" wide Masking tape right along all 4 edges of the CPU - this stops AS spreading out of the core or heat spreader and onto the circuit of the MoBo. I find the masking tape specially useful when I am cleaning off old compunds or thermal pads as there seems to be some splatter when I am cleaning the top of the CPU with Acetone. Masking tape is preferable becuase it does not seem to leave any goonk behind when removed unlike regular sticky tapes.

Just my Rs 0.02....

A picture from AS of the amount ........ everything else you mentioned is abs right :)

masking Tape i use only when applying heatsink over the tiny frequency generator ic and voltage regulator ic (not the voltage regulator) on the m/b. or when applying h/s over the ram chips on the gfx cards. (and more importantly while removing the existing thermal compounds from them. as the IC pins on these chips are dangerously close to the surface where the thermal compound is applied and some compund always gets between the pins which is very time consuming to remove ...)
For cpu and gpu i have no patience to be that meticulous.

hmmmm.....i put full GOOP paste over the RAMs when i use RAMSinks....even those RAM pins were covered with the goop :P nothing happened..

sent tht card for replacement....goop was still left between the RAM pins...still got replaced :P
