hi guys

this might seem like a dumb question but i really have no idea what is the answer to it so i am posting it as a thread

i have been trying to get a 2x4gb kit but none of the dealers seem to have one so i am left with no option but to go with two 1 x 4gb xms3 sticks

a popular dealer told me that they will work just fine as dual channel but i am afraid to trust him

can anyone here tell me if this combination will work as dual channel setup

Re: are two 1 x 4gb sticks equivalent to 2x4gb sticks

One stick will not work in dual channel mode. You need 2x4GB sticks for them to work in dual channel.

Re: are two 1 x 4gb sticks equivalent to 2x4gb sticks

2x X GB is better then 1x X GB as then the rams will run in dual channel mode thereby you will get a minor performance boost.

yes i know that and i had mentioned in my post that i intend to buy two sticks of 4gb each

just that these sticks are sold separately unlike the dual channel sticks that are sold in pairs

yeah i know that but i intend to go have 8gb of memory in total and not just 4gb so i need two 4gb sticks

Re: are two 1 x 4gb sticks equivalent to 2x4gb sticks

^better go for the dual channel kit, if you don't get it then just but two ram running at the same frequency, preferably of the same brands :)
Check their timings as well

yes i am searching for the same but unable to find one

so this is the next option left with me

Re: are two 1 x 4gb sticks equivalent to 2x4gb sticks

what ram you want to buy ddr3 or ...??

Re: are two 1 x 4gb sticks equivalent to 2x4gb sticks

Why do you want 8GB, what is the main purpose of using the PC and what mobo do you have??

Well here are two product you might be interested in :

Theitdepot - Corsair XMS3 8GB (2 X 4GB) DDR3 1600MHz Desktop Memory (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9)

Theitdepot - Corsair XMS3 8GB (2 X 4GB) DDR3 1333MHz Desktop Memory (CMX8GX3M2A1333C9)

watching movies

some photo editing and gaming

thanks for the suggestions but are a bit costly

Re: are two 1 x 4gb sticks equivalent to 2x4gb sticks

^^But those are better, IMO 8GB is more then enough for you. you can be happy with 4-6Gb :)

Re: are two 1 x 4gb sticks equivalent to 2x4gb sticks

I don't think there is any problem as long as both rams have same frequency. Other things to look for - same brand, timing and size.

I am using two sticks of kingston running in dual channel mode bought seperately.

No mate it is not necessary for both the rams to be of the same size. I am using 1x1Gb and 1x2Gb in dual channel :)
main thing is the frequency

correct , the RAM's should have same speed and not size

i feel 4gb is kind of less and 8gb is a bit over the top but since the new sandy bridge motherboards support only dual channel memory i will have to go ahead with 8gb

yes i agree that they are better but at the moment they are beyond my reach

that is awesome guys

i did not know this at all

although i have no idea how to go about the ram timings and how to make sure they are perfectly identical i think it does not require rocket science

but tell me if this is so simple then why not just buy two sticks separately only as it costs less

i have observed that all the dual channel memory kits have a difference of at least 600 to 800 bucks over two identical sticks of the same category

Re: are two 1 x 4gb sticks equivalent to 2x4gb sticks

^^Go ahread as i have said before get two sticks, of same frequency. you will get your work done :)

You can also get these if SMC still has them in stock.

G-Skill[ Ripjaws-X ] F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM

They are a steal for the price (Compared to the other options we have in India). These are rated CL8 and even with all 4 slots on my mobo populated with these (4 x 4GB), they are running @ 8-8-8-24-1T without a hitch with voltage @ 1.5V.

Gskill Sandy Bridge 8GB 1600Mhz DDR3 4GB X 2

SMC lists a 8GB GSkill Sandy Kit! Its a CL9 kit for 5.3k

thanks a lot CA50

i might opt for a pair of vengeance sticks of 4gb each

they will cost around 5000 bucks so it looks like a good deal though i might need help with tweaking the ram timings

or

my other option is a pair of gskill from smc as suggested by darkangel

they will cost me 5400 with shipping

i am not aware about the after sales service of gskill here in mumbai so will check it out tomorrow and make a decision then

and guys on smc in the 'mode of payment' option i can only see bank transfer option

any idea on how do i go about that

seems i cannot pay through my credit card

i dont mind going for them as it costs just 450 bucks more but does cl9 and cl8 really make a noticeable difference

especially in gaming

my cpu is the i5 2500

without k
