Mastermind
Let me get this straight. This is not an article from some research or study. Just some thing I ended up thinking yesterday.

I came across lots of threads of TE where people ask questions to solutions for setting up download rigs for downloading 24/7 nonstop. If you go through sections like Buying advice, Networking, Internet or Broadband, there would be some threads related to download rig or router for download or nas for home server with download capability or best connection for downloading etc. You get the drift.
And lots of people have mentioned that they own terabytes of data, backed up on two separate disks, have high speed connections downloading stuff like there's no tomorrow in sight. To top it, some enterprising souls have managed to use their poor mobiles as a downloading device.

I'm guilty too, having a standalone download device for my download needs. Who is a chronic downloader?
Answer these questions truthfully and you will find out if you are addicted to downloading stuff.

01 - You feel the need to download something if you see your torrent client list empty and just sitting idle.
02 - You search google for things to download because its the month end and you haven't used up your monthly data quota.
03 - You have a separate download rig. In case of its failure, you can download from your main rig or from your router too.
04 - You frequently buy > 1TB hard disks and end up complaining about space after around 6-7 months.
05 - You have more hard disks than your neighbours or their neighbours or anyone known to you in your apartment building or among your relatives.
06 - You dont delete stuff which you have seen and probably will never see in the near future. You have kept it because you forgot about it or in the hope of watching it in the coming years.
07 - You have plans for a media/data storage device in your house for streaming data to all devices.
08 - You are in search of a faster and cheaper connection since your download list is quite long and has more than 100 files in queue.
09 - You have more than one UL/ Limited high speed internet connection to your home.
10 - You spend hours on IMDB or other sites searching for a good tv/movie to watch. Then you head on to the usual sites to search and download their hi definition rips.
11 - Your very old stuff which you downloaded years ago in avi format was released in bluray recently and you put it in your download queue.
12 - You have watched more television programs than anyone else or heard more music than anyone else.
13 - You have loads of pr-- hidden in your drive. You see a new face and you start a search on google for those image sets.
14 - You are an anime/ manga/ all things japan fan. You know what OVA/OAV or AV/IV etc mean.
15 - Your friends always ask you what you keep downloading/ cant understand why you keep downloading/ stare at you in wonder when they know how much terabytes of space you have or come to you for copying stuff.
16 - You download more than 100GB data a month even with a 256k connection.
17 - You hate your ISP for their FUP limits. FUP limits according to you should be 500GB a month.
18 - You have an annual subscription to one or more filesharing sites.
19 - You have all the latest programs installed on your computer.
20 - You download stuff because there's vacant space lying unused on your hdd.
21 - You feel depressed when you don't have anything new to watch in your media player. The normal stuff on tv is not worth seeing.
22 - So what if I download too much? Mind your own business.

So how much did you tick from this list? 15 or more and you know what? - you're addicted to downloading.
Damn, I'm addicted. :|

Btw, the poll is private and even I wont know who voted what. :) So do it truthfully.

After 5 years of waking up at 3-4 AM to download using my BSNL 500c plan,i think my download addiction is fading away. Now i start download only at 5 AM:bleh:.Besides that,i started buying most of the games that i play.So it feels like there is little left to download in this world:unsure:

Though I like to utilise my connection to downloading, I don't spend sleepless nights over it. And right now, I have created the thread where I am looking for a cheap PC to store all data. I do have loads of data like other eminent geeks on this forum and need a place to store it centrally.

This is quite similar to is basic evolution I believe. I started with a simple computer in college. Burned DVDs and kept them away from careless friends. When I lost my 150 DVD pack (read stolen), then I decided it was time to buy a big sized HDD and dump data there.

The same time HDDs started going cheap. So, I bought a few and kept piling on data.

Also, I would like to point out that I am the type of person who switches on old movies from any part and starts watching them till the end. So, no, my data is not only for display. I do use it. Also, my parents, believe it or not, are huge consumers of all the shows and movies, thanks to the HTPC (with XMBC) connected directly to the 40" LCD in their room.

I think there might be 10 per cent of the data which I have solely kept because I have not gotten a chance to view it yet; I think it is unfair to call it waste.

I have more or less reached a saturation point and the next HDD I will buy will solely be for backup purposes.

I used to have separate Atom RIG for downloading but its fades away after getting EV-DO. since i am getting almost 2-3 Mbps anytime on my connection. so i download it on my main RIG when i need it something.

I used to download like crazy, but now that I have 3G on my phone and a 4Mbps connection at home, so that i can stream music on my phone, and video on my laptop, I dont download any more - I don't need to. What i need is available on demand, anywhere, any time :)

mainly use downloading for my software needs and movies and shows ....mostly shows and movies are deleted after watching , unless the very good ones which the best quality ones are downloaded and kept , although i am guilty of never finding time to watch it ...definitely not addicted...
but if not for the torrent and freely available medias , i wouldnot have watched so many documentaries and forgein language movies and shows.

You can always use auto connect sofware for automatically start download torrent file at 2 am.it wake up your pc,connect to the net and open utorrent all automatically and also shut down comouter at 8 am.
I am using it for past 4 years without any problem.

Used to be

Then I got a beam connection, realised I can download what I need to when I need to without any waiting, so I didnt need to keep torrents queued!!

I know I am hooked to the above patter, though I do not have a great big download Que and I do not download more than ~25GB / per month [thanks to MTNL and father].

My main aim is to get HD RIPz / BluRay RIPz of movies / films that I own on DVD, simply because I do not want to buy a BluRay player and buy the same collection again. Apart from this, I download films that never reach Indian shores [thank you censor board and communal politics] and music [another commodity that is not available commonly in any Planet-M / LANDMARK / Odyssey].

I buy most of the games I play [one-two odd are pirated] and I do not download software as such, generally the odd MOD pack for the games is on torrent [but that is legit, I guess ].

18/22 things on that list check out,OMG !!
I'm truely addicted,I keep my desktop turned ON even at night and its not a download Rig,its just a normal daily use desktop

If i can't keep my desktop ON,then its time to unleash my sony lappy and then again i also have a torrent client on my GNex
So,i download on all the 3 available devices with me...sadly can't use my PB as it doesn't have a torrent client :p

My monthly downloads goes around 125GB , and in hot gaming seasons around 200GB

Yeah but these day older bsnl download plan are not sufficient to fulfil my addiction .
I am in a need of awesome net speed but their is only bsnl tikona and sify is available in my area.tikona has recently launched 4 Mbps unlimited plan for 1499 so anybody has used this plan .

tikona has recently launched 4 Mbps unlimited plan for 1499 so anybody has used this plan.

For peace of mind I suggest that you stay away from Tikona, there will be a catch in the plan. A useless FUP cap on top of it and thanks to their 'advanced 4G technologies' hopeless signal attenuation loss [which will be deliberately increased after a certain amount of data has been downloaded].

So take it from me, a ex-Tikona user that no matter how tempting the plan looks, KEEP DISTANCE.
