Are we under cyber attack with failing grids

everything is made in china.the rack for the scada terminals for scada at the receiving station in my city are all emblazoned, rather proudly-made in china.
AND,IIRC,everything is controlled at one center for a region.so,take one down and you can shut off a state/part of it.

I am smelling something Fishy... looks like some Holly director has bribed our government to do power cut across India, so that they can have some nice shots for their upcoming movies like "2013" "2 day after tomorrow" "Dark Knight Hell beneath sun" :P

Why was the power minister made The home minister in such a hurry?.... Because, had he completed the hat trick of blackouts, he would have to be made The PM. :)

I still stand by my opinion that this was cyberattack.

If you think it is only the archaic Indian power grids that can be crippled by cyber armies, you need a load of briefing on the fact that even US uber-secure-network-centric-Power-Gas-Ammenties grid can be easily hacked thanks to the presence of several 'zero-day' flaws in the hardware / ICS-software maintaining them, the major manufacturers themselves refuse to patch these loop holes.

who said America runs uber smart ?

American systems are screwed by Chinese hackers since ages.

from where is china making so rapid military modernization?
during Clinton admin.,it started and till today Chinese hackers are breaching American systems for getting top secret data.

Do you even know what lead to hacking the nuclear facility in iran? its funny when you say SCADA is hackable... Read about stuxnet.

Iranian attack was specifically targeted using exploits on Siemens systems. At that time, some even claimed a failed Indian rocket launch was also because of same stuxnet.
I do not think it was an online like attack, exploiters (were under USA and Israel directions... or so goes the talks...) used offline devices like USB drives, etc., it is heard.
Mostly, secure facilities run on separate lan/wan than intranet, etc. isolated from external networks.

I was not saying that American systems are super-secure OR anything like that, what I want to bring to your attention is that even if we rebuild a new GRID using non-Chinese parts / indigenous equipment there will be enough wriggle room for the baddies to come in.

This is happening in a place like the US which has agencies like ICS-CERT whose main profile is to keep tab on such Industrial Control Software and their security preparedness, unfortunately the organization is crippled due to a lack of teeth, imagine what can happen in a country like India where all such organizations are headed by retired BABU's who have no idea off how crucial their vigilance is. They will sell the organization to whichever company that shows them the green stuff [and I do not mean weed].

China's militarization is a worrying trend though nothing out of the ordinary, they have a strong foreign affairs policy backed by a growing military might. It is time we did that too, if we want to be observed and treated like a Super-power.

My simple question is why all this super critical systems are connected to Internet ??
What is need ??
They dig ther own graves!!

What is point in having Internet connected grids??

China's military might is coming from all stolen stuff and all reverse engineered purchases.

You are just like a dozen other people on the net who think China is still the country that is coping the AK47 family -->AK56, flying MiG21's --> Chengdu J7. Wake up dude, read a couple of treatises like Chanakya's Artha-Shasthra and Sun Tzu's ART OF WAR understand the underlying principle of how China has risen on guile, repression and clever espionage.

They have their family of bullpup-class rifle(s) --> Norinco Type86, have built prototypes of Asia's heaviest helicopter [which they plan to put into production soon] and have their own tanks [which they have sold to Pakistan and Bangladesh].

For that matter even India's first indigenous helicopter [ALH -- Dhruv] and light fighter [HAL Tejas] are copies of the MBB / Kawasaki BK117 and the French MIRAGE IIIc.

My simple question is why all this super critical systems are connected to Internet ??

Plenty of reasons, will you like to go pay your electricity and phone bill at the local government office(s), would you like to face an opaque and hard system with no transparency in its operations?

Everything has two sides friend, an observable good side and a not so visible dark-side. Obviously India has not learnt from other country(s) mistakes, we copy systems part-to-part but do not have the technical know how OR organizations to maintain and safeguard these installations.
