Eeeerrrmmmm... All you b33ches with the l33t 4870, flash this BIOS and enjoy higher clocks and supposedly better fan profile as well :P

Source: 4870 ASUS TOP BIOS (upto 900MHz in CCC) - XtremeSystems Forums

Tools Needed :P

1. USB Flash drive
2. Win98 Boot Files (Mr. Supra to give the link :P)
3. The BIOS files (Of course :P)
4. ATiFlash 3.60

Steps:

1. Save the atiflash.exe and .cfg file on the USB drive.
2. Use GPU-Z 0.2.6 (TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.2.6) to take a dump of the stock BIOS and save it. Take a dump of this on the USB stick as well.
3. Rename the downloaded ASUS BIOS to mod.rom (.rom / bin as the case maybe - The ASUS file is a rom file) and save it on the USB drive.
4. Restart PC and it should boot in Win 98 DOS mode (Check for Boot Drive priorities if it doesn't).
5. The command for flashing is atiflash -p 0 *.rom / bin.

Once its done, restart the PC and you should be good to go :)

why? Why in the world would someone need to OC their 4870?

Just for the heck of it :P Poooooosssssyyyyyyy  Abbey.. This is at stock volts and as such, doesn't make any difference to the heat generated. Why not have that extra juice ? :P

4870 ocing is quite good with gains about 15-20%,unlike previous generation(read 3870) where ocing barely made a difference.

What else? Useless benching and more numbers. 1-2 fps increase in games is hardly noticeable :|

ocing makes difference to the heat generated regardless of whether there is a change in voltage or not, though not as much as in getting a cpu from 2.4G to 3.6G.

Well I get 27 fps to 36 fps in Crysis High 2x AA . Who says its just 1-2 fps :P

In COD4/ Grid4 the diff is as big as being able to enable lot more eyecandy :P

I am talking abt ocing the core by as much as 30-40% :P

Anyway here are the tools :

HP USB Tool--

HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8 Download - EXTREME Overclocking

Win 98 system files image

Windows 98 System Files Download - EXTREME Overclocking

well i get an increase of 12FPS in GRID and 20FPS in COD4 with everything maxed out and 4XAA so overclocking does make a difference in FPS(It might also be because of a low end card but who knows)

woah, ppl took my comments seriously

please forgive me, i'm still stuck in the times of 9800Pros :P

You really think a 4870 isnt able to play all games right now at stock speeds? You really need to OC to play with all eye candy turned on?

I am asking honestly. No sarcasm here. I havent even pushed my card. Still playing at 1024x768. Please enlighten me. I thought the 4870 will play ALL games at 1680x1050 with all eye candy turned on.

even 4870 wont be able to play all games if u r trying out the new shader based AA modes ! Lost planet for eg is quite taxing if u crank everything up :P

Yup. Exactly. Not a big fan of Crysis anyway.
I mean all other normal games :P

What about Call of Jaurez, GRAW 2, Obilvion & Lost Planet with all setting max. at 1920 or at 1650.? Without OC we dont get max juice from 4870.

this about flashing BIOS n get clocks set to higher at stock .......which would not change even temps .

so 4870 without flashed BIOS will seem like underclocked card .
