Linux ASUS EEEPC file sharing issue

I've got the ASUS EeePC 4G. My desktop PC is running Windows 7 and I've got a Belkin router for sharing my broadband connection with the Eee PC and another Dell laptop running Vista.

Now, I've shared files and folders on my desktop connection which are being detected on the Eee PC. But instead of playing them immediately like the Dell laptop, Eee PC proceeds to copy them instead and once the copying is finished, then plays the video.

Why is this happening? Anything else that needs to be done?

Some details would help. How did you share the files in Win7? Using the new homegroup sharing or plain windows file sharing? What OS (linux distro and version) is the EEEPC using? How did you set up the SAMBA client on the EEEPC?

Maybe there are some settings that can be changed to fix this.

Also, what program are you using to view files? Tried another player to see if it support the file sharing protocol better? Did you "mount" the share to some linux folder or directly accessing it via "smb://" type URL?

why dont u install windows xp on EEE , i am having vista on pc and xp on EEE and wifi router connected. can share files between them without any issue .

I'm sharing the files using plain Windows sharing. I've not changed anything on the Eee PC, i.e. it is running the same distro it came with.

Umm, I've not configured any SAMBA client. I just typed in my desktop's name i.e. //Sei-PC in the address bar of the file manager.

PS: Another funny thing is that my desktop computer is not visible on my dad's Vista laptop, even though the net is being accessed and the wireless connection being detected. Even after typing //Sei-PC in the address bar, it comes up that the computer is not found. :(

Actually my mom uses the laptop for casual web surfing and watching movies/series. I've told her umpteen number of times to switch, but she is not ready to! :P

haha, are you saying your mom is a linux fan??? :D woot!

its going to be hard to troubleshoot without details, you might find better luck researching online, playing with the eeepc installation...

Vishal Sir, I really need help on this. What details do you need? If you can tell me how you would go ahead with it, that would be fine too. Just want to get it working. I've mentioned how I did it in the post below Roboghost's. Anything else I can tell you?

in my post above roboghost's i put some questions. in the post below you answered some of them but for example, for the question: "what distro and version?" you replied "eeepc same as it came with" :D so i'm scratching my balding head now.

let me also try now that im booted into win7 on my desktop, i can check on my tablet... i will post my results.

edit: i can connect to the share and view the files, i can open things like PDFs but cant seem to play movies at all. still working on it.

see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=404066 if that helps...

edit2: well VLC could not play the file directly off the share, i had to mount the share to local folder then it worked - no "copying the file first" it was playing/streaming directly and immediately off the share... this is on arch linux.

smbfs seems to be outmoded, i used cifs with the following command line as root, guest user didnt work, so used my account, you can figure out how to make it permanent in your /etc/fstab:

Code:
mount -t cifs -o username=MyUserName,password="MyPassword",ip=192.168.1.2,workgroup=HOMEGROUP //192.168.1.2/Movies /mnt

Of course you use the right IP address and share name and mount point for your case...
