Needs a further price drop imho..........
Sources said AMD is providing the entry-level dual-core Athlon 64 X2 3600+ (ADA3600DUBOX) processor in the short coming future. Share the same core of Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (2GHz/512KB L2 x2), Winsor, it has the same clock speed but its cache is reduced from 512KB X 2 to 256KB X 2. The price is $148. Compared with Athlon 64 X2 3800+, which has the price of $159, it’s only 6.84% cheaper.
AMD would focus on the mainstream Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2 products in the second half of the year. Athlon 64 is raised its production from 4.63 million to 7.2 million in Q3. Athlon 64 X2 however is ever more, from 1 million in Q2 to 3.16 million in Q3. The market expects Athlon 64 X2 3600+ would hold a certain amount of share.
Yet without much difference Athlon 64 X2 3600+ and Athlon 64 X2 3800+ in price, perhaps it hasn’t got too much advantages to against dual-core Pentium D 820 (2.8GHz/1MB L2 x2/800MHz FSB) and Pentium D 915 D (2.8GHz/1MB L2 x2/800MHz FSB). We may expect AMD to further lower the price to 3600+.
