is it a significant upgrade.i got a corsair hx620 psu,intel c2d 2.4ghz,2 gb ram,asus p5b.
is new age cards like 6670 performs comparable to 4850 with less power consumption
i also plan for gpu accelerated video encoding. is 4850 enough. also to play games at 1366*--- resolution at medium settings of latest games

^^Yes its decent upgrade over 1800xt. 4850 is enough for that res on medium settings. But if you're buying old one then only get the 4850 else get a 5670 1gb for 5k

It does perform better than 5670... 4850 has two drawbacks over 5670, thats More power consumption and no DX11 support, but still beats out 5670 in gaming. According to me, 4850 performs near to 5750 in gaming. If you are getting second deal of 4850 in say 3K then take it eyes closed or else get a new 6670 or 5750 in 6K range. But 5750 beats 6670 by a great margin (even the GTS450) :)

4850 is a very strong card make no mistake

but its notorious for being hot too

i will suggest you get a 5770@6.5k or 5670@4.8k

'cause in the long run temps/noise do matter

IMO at your res of 1366x HD5670 should be a good buy

i would say go for either a HD 5750 or a GTS 450. They will suffice your gaming needs. The reason i say this is because although the HD 4850 performs at least at par with those cards if not slightly better, but it is very very very hot. You will routinely see the HD 4850 hitting 90C with the stock cooler

isn't 4xxx series production stopped by ati? there is no point in buying a new dx10 card in 2011 unless its until and unless you find a second hand one for a lower price, dont go for a brand new 4850. instead you can go for 5770 or gts 450.

i'm going for second hand but now confused becoz of how hot it gets and the power consumption thereby

but the extra money for the new one...is it worth in the long run. i'm an average gamer

make sure that card you are buying has an aftermarket cooler as the stock reference cooler is plainly inefficient... When i had the 4850 it used to touch 105 degrees within 15 min of gaming with stock cooler.
