It was considered that the video card radeon HD 4870 and Radeon HD 4850 will be proposed for $349 and $249 moreover in the first case buyer will obtain video card with 1Gb GDDR5 memory . According to extract from official AMD document , dated 26 May, the company notified its partners about reduction in the recommended prices of video card HD 48XX .

In particular, Radeon HD 4870 with 512mb GDDR5 memory will be proposed for $329, and Radeon HD 4850 with 512mb GDDR3 memory will be proposed for $229. Thus, AMD reduced the initial prices by $20.

Associates also report that Radeon HD 4870 will be approximately up to 40% faster than GeForce 9800 GTX, and Radeon HD 4850 will prove to be 10% faster than the same Nvidia video card .

radeon hd 4870 and 4850 price drop

hehe lets say 9800GTX is 10% faster than 8800GT, and SLIed 8800GTs will give approx 160% boost not 200%, right scaling ?? So 4870 is 40% faster than 9800GTX, which is allmost equal to 8800GT SLi.

8800GT = 0.9

9800GTX = 1

4870 = 1.4

8800GT SLi = 0.9X1.6 = 1.44

What say ??? Be polite if I m wrong.

40% faster but in what applications, I am sure they always take the 3dmark scores which is the most inaccurate metric for real world gaming performance..

Let the card release, let the drivers be a lil stable and then compare, in any case I feel 4850 will soon fall in the 9600GT price range...

^ to be honest, 3D mark favours nVidia. so if 40% is the difference in 3D mark as U r predicting, expect even bigger in real world.

I think you meant 3D Mark favours ATI. BTW 3D Mark 2006 was s**t. Vantage reflects more real-world performance.

I believe 4870 to be slightly better than 3870X2 and that will pit it squarely against 8800GT SLIs. But of course, that does not mean that two 8800GT will be able to hold the card back. For one you need SLI (expensive) mobo for two Nvidia cards and secondly thermal and power usage will favour 4870.

I think we are going to see some real re-alignment in power/performance ratio with 3850, 3870, 9600GT and maybe 8800GT holding the entry-level in gaming-grade gfx at <$150 :ohyeah: ; 8800GTS selling quite well till it is <$200; 9800GTX getting routed by 4850 in $200-$250 segment; 4870 having a field day in $290-$380 segment and 3870X2 meeting sudden death; GTX260 finding takers in $450-$500 market but could not reign supreme coz of "good scaling (assumed)" of two 4850s (there are more Crossfire compatible mobos than SLI mobos in the market) and GTX280 bringing up the rear-end, serving those with big pockets, big monitor, big PSU and a big cabinet full of big fans :P

Later 4870X2 will come and trade blows with GTX260 and GTX280.

If it proves true, this will be ATI's summer unless 9800GT does not bring in a surprise package in $200-$250 segment.

^^from the price, i dont think it can surpass even current nvidia cards
where did the 40% figure come from??

and yeah...3dmark does favour ati cards more....best example is the 2900xt :P

Why the hell will they reduce the price even before the launch if their cards are able to outperform the current gen easily. I will not place my bet on ATi after this move...

O RLY! At Newegg one can buy a reference 3870X2 @ around $330... even less if you take in account mail-in-rebates. Do you really think ATI will release its next gen card at a higher price/similar price than its previous gen card even when it can't beat the previous gen card?

From the price, one can definitely say that 4870 is going to be better than 3870X2. Find out any recent review and you will see that 3870X2 simply kicks 9800GTX in its butt. In titles where it falls behind 9800GTX (mostly at lower res) it does so because of Crossfire issues.

with 4870, there won't be any Crossfire issues ;)

also the new bridge chips which are gonna show up on the 4870X2 will the better than the current ones..dats wht ATI has been saying.

If thats true then its gonna be tough between the 4870X2 and the Gt 280.

Also ATi will be moving to 45 nm very soon (by the end of the yr) ..so dat will mean more cost savings in production which indirectly will help ATI to be cost competitive even if they dont have the performance crown.

Other early Computex product information includes some shots of the upcoming ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card. This card is reported to feature 512MB of GDDR3 and will retail in the $179 to $219 range.

DailyTech - Early Biostar P45 Motherboard and Radeon HD 4850 Information from Computex

3d mark from the start had just been a pimp my video card benchy, its scores matter a jack during gameplay. At that pricepoint 4850 will be an awesome buy, dont see any NV card at point for next 6 mths or so...

uh.. one question though.. is the 4870 going to be avalible before say July?? Seriously doubt that considering the GDDR5 RAM.. :ashamed:

Big deal! If you can wait till fourth week of June to get this card, you can definitely wait another 7 days. Right?

All this jus makes it more exciting....I really cant wait for the launch..and buy one of these babies!...

Im keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that the 4870 and 4850 are successful.

+ if ATI gets the crossfire issues sorted out, its more likely that users would buy ATI due to the fact that almost all of the mainstream intel motherboards are crossfire boards :)

In the end we are going to see some awesome cards or some cool price drops soon!

VR-ZONE has tested unborn HD4850..u can check it here
