ATI bad, Nvidia good, says, er, Nvidia

BERNHARD Gleissner, Nvidia sales director, Europe showed off a spooky presentation with women with tails, little buzzing insects, and dancing dominatrices to kick off its premier event here at the System Builder Summit.

Gleissner is pitching here to the distributor, reseller and system builder community. Gartner holds these events twice yearly in Europe, with vendors such as AMD, Phoenix and Vodafone sponsoring the action.

Gleissner said the spooky movie showed Nvidia's version of Moore's Law and how it invests in networking storage, system on a chip. Wired says Nvidia is 24th in the list of companies that are masters of technology and innovation. ATI isn't in that list, said Gleissner.

Nvidia products and ideas include MXM for notebooks. There are over 50 MXM designs, said Gleissner. Turbo Cash was invented because retailers wanted a very cheap graphics card, he said. As we know, Turbo Cash will grab system memory if necessary instead of dedicated on board memory.

And then there's Scalable Link Interface - which Gleissner said had become a standard in the last six months. Basically you need to use two cards for SLI and according to Gleissner that gives you pretty damn good performance. Nvidia has shipped over 600,000 motherboards and that's a potential for 2,500,000 graphics card at pricepoints of 3,500 Euros. Gamers will pay money for real good PCs. That's good news for system integrators.

TWIMTBP (the way it is meant to be played) is one of Nvidia's most important inventions. Dozens of people from Nvidia go out to brief games developers launching products, give them early access to hardware and he said TWIMTBP covers three hundred titles. Nvidia sells more graphics cards that way.

Gleissner threw out CDs of a game to system integrators that got these four questions right. He nearly decapitated one of them he threw it so hard, but hey, the channel is tough. They're used to that, you know.

He said ATI represented the Dark Force as represented by Darth V. and Nvidia the Light Force, as represented by Yoda. And showed a slide with Darth V holding a red wand and Yoga a green wand.

This, of course, is the familiar heresy of Manichee, where you have a good angel on your right shoulder and the devil on your left. Right? And if you decapitate a customer or too, well casualties happen in war.
