@Carbon this is what I suggest --

Intel Core i5 3450 ~12500/- (the i5 3550 has only a 200MHz base and Turbo boost over this processor and is not worth the extra ~2000/- quid in my opinion)
ASUS P8H77-V ~10000/- (try to go with a full-ATX motherboard as far as possible, they have more connectors, more space and in general are easier to manage)
[rest of your RIG is fine as is and I cannot improve on it]

Word of advise instead of getting a single 3TB disk I suggest smaller, single platter 1TB drives as their failure rates are lesser.

If you are not going to add a GPU then me thinks that the Seasonic S12II 520W should be enough for your needs.

Hope this helps, Cheerio!

Thanks. I already have two 1 gig disks which are almost full. So adding 2 more will increase the power consumption. It'll be just used as storage. Might even get a external one. Anyways, i'll be buying the first batch next month and the second batch in November. So, still there's some time to ponder over this.

Missed that, sorry.

If it is going to be a data dump then fine but you will still need to be extremely wary of it failing on you. So best keep regular backups.

Will be getting quotes from SP Road today

It's nearly 1k difference. I'll order it from OnlySSD.com. Thanks.

I'll be also building a mini-ITX rig. Suggest a motherboard for Intel Atom N2600. I also heard there are box packs of mobo+proccy. Also a cabinet is needed. It should be cheapest rig. No HD content viewing or games. It should have support for WLAN and 3.5" HD and if possible USB 3.

If not HD content is being viewed what do you need it for? Basic backup RIG with 24 x7 download capability?
If yes, why do not you simply purchase a Raspberry Pi ~3000/-.

If you want to go down the Intel / AMD Fusion (CPU + motherboard path) then I suggest that you can go for the following --
  • AMD E350 + MSi / GIGABYTE mITX motherboard ~7500- OR suitable Intel ATOM replacement.
  • Corsair 4GB x1 ValueRAM module ~1100/- (add another module at your discretion)
  • A pico-SMPS ~150W (comes bundled with certain cabinets)
  • Cooler Master eLite 100 ~3000/- (comes with the pico-SMPS)
Hope this helps, Cheerio!

Yes, it's for the 24x7 download rig, but I need a Win XP on it for some reasons. So, let go of the Raspberry/PogoPlug idea.

What's the power consumption of E350 ? I bet it'll be much more than the N2600.

My first rig was based on an Athlon XP which I was using till last year ;)

So, what if I wanted to use the WiFi ? What are my options ?

Adapter card OR USB based device in my opinion. Running Windows XP on this setup will take a toll on its efficiency.
