Audio Setup for my living room- What speakers?

The setup in the lower picture

i.e. a Mac Mini and a Marantz PM-17

with the mini, I also get the advantage of using my phone as a full fledged ipod like device with the difference that it is actually a remote for this setup

On a side note, these things are ridiculously power hungry

Nice nice, your setups are always droolworthy.:)

Get them a little further into the room. In the current setting, the image will be blurry thanks to the furniture in the middle. Get some decent speaker cable as well :P. The best of MX is just 100 bux a meter. Lamp wire that you have currently won't have shielding.

Uh, I'm already bracing myself for the beating I am going to get next week for getting these speakers ..

at least let me not hurt the aesthetic senses of the lady by doing that :ashamed:

Congrats!! :)

Messa'd probably be posted at Chennai starting Feb-March; Will've to fix up lot of appointments I guess. :P

Chaos dada's setups were too good.

Self proclaimed Apple fanboi..and not ashamed of it

All set & settled

Using MX interconnects, cables and Banana Plugs

I'm not a big fan of uber expensive cables and interconnects and the whole paraphernalia of cabling cost me ~ 1000/- (% mtrs of MX cable, 2 banana plugs and a stereo - RCA interconnect)

Now I just need to sleeve the cables behind the table and will be all set

Congrats on the purchase, SuperCzar. Were the KEF iQ5s bought anew or was it the deal offered by that gentleman from Chennai?

Based on my audition at ProFx the KEFs sounded nice and mellow but did not seem to have that essential punch when needed to make it fully involving. Also the new KEFs are quite a bit overpriced when compared to the competition, I thought.

Got it used from the same gentleman :)

The iQ5s are a very different speaker from my Phase Techs

I really don't want to go into the nonsensical stereophile mode of writing (take a heady mix of buzzwords like great Warmth, fast transients, accurate soundstaging, holographic imaging and what not and just weave a few sentences around them)

But all I can say is I am absolutely loving them... and they are a steal for the price...

The midrange on these speakers is the best I have heard incl speakers 5X the price, and the highs are very very good

The bass is very controlled (and suits Rock very very much..every single drum sounds just the way it should) but you'll be disappointed if you used these to listen to Electronica/Trance ( wouldn't play Van Dyk on them for sure) or expect them to create earthshaking bass while watching movies (unless you couple them with a sub)

I really don' think I will be using them to watch movies at all (After all, what's the phase Tech + DSW Pro sub combination for :D - As soon as get a replacement AVR though :( )

But frankly, these are speakers for music (& just music) alone.....

Maybe you can drop in for a dekko sometime ...

Thanks for the invite, Superczar. I have a standing invite from Gmano too which is pending for quite some time.

I am still in the process of setting up my system. I am expecting my EPOS ELS Sub to reach home in a few days. Let it come and then I can give a review of my various experiences in the interim period with various brands and several auditions:)

I am glad you are enjoying the KEFs. Bought new, the KEF iQ5s are about 35K. At that price, floorstanders such as Wharfedale Diamond 9.6 and Jamo Concert Series speakers caught my attention. But it could just be my preference.

I am not at all into rock music or electronica of any kind. I am a plain vocal and simple instrument guy. So, purity of midrange is my first preference too. In that regard, I did not find anything to beat the EPOS M 12.2 as yet. Absolutely sweet speaker. I might yet buy that....but its just about at the edge of my budget:)

Of course there was a speaker which thrashed all of these into oblivion in all departments. The Focal Electra floorstander which I heard at ProFx. Man, I was blown away absolutely. I listened to just one song on that. But that was enough. The beauty of that was that the showroom vanished and I was placed in the company of the singers in the same room. When the song completed, it was almost as if we were coming out of an illusion. But then those speakers costed about 1.5 lakhs:)

And you know what, Superczar, specifically because of your favourable review I might go and listen to the iQ5 once more at ProFx to see if I missed anything earlier.
