Hi,

Getting tempted with the AD700.

Couple of queries:

1. How good are these sound wise? I intend to use them for normal everyday use. Movies/FPS/music. Music will be soft rock/pop/some trance etc. Not really a heavy bass lover.

2. Do these need a separate amp or am I ok with normal mp3/PC 3.5mm source?

3. I am NOT an audiophile in any way :P

4. How disturbing is teh open design with regards to sound leaks?

5. Build quality? (since no warranty :P)

Looking for responses from the audio gurus out here :)

At its price range its certainly one of the best. Ofcourse a dedicated amp will bring more faithful reproduction but my assumption is that a good soundcard will also be able to do justice. About they being open cans, that gives you better soundstage in lieu of a bit lesser muddied bass, so all is good. Build quality is pretty good, but why are you banking on the no warranty??? i thought there are 2 guyz before you??? including me. :bleh:

onboard sound then why the AD700???? buy something like the senn HD202 or the philips model, and you will have decent cans for music and all. I am no audiophile as well, but my assumption of using onboard sounds many years ago is that you will not be able to appreciate the difference between 2k and 5k cans.

hmmm..thats wat it seems like :( its the impulse buy thing ;)

I'm no audio pro either but I have just one thing to say that the open design is quite disturbing to people around you

I have a Sennheiser HD555 & I just cover the outside grills with thick hankies to stop the sound leak :P

audio-technica ATH-AD700 don't need any external amp too as they are only 32 ohm :)

well to these headphones have a detachable cable ,since i had 2 good philips and 1 sony headphones all have a loose contact,i even gave to the philips service center they had it for 2 weeks and they could'nt fix it.

its audophile-budget based headphone in short....best bang for bucks

hmmm...still confused. These are good headphones, but my source is onboard which ll suck.

and i want to use these with my PC mostly.

Don't buy something which you don't totally NEED\HAVE to buy.

if you need to get a decent set of cans, take banik's suggestion and get a nice pair of philips.

As other have indicated, these are the best bang-for-buck cans. Sound-stage reproduction is brilliant. Almost every genre of music sounds great with these cans. They're great for gaming too.

These cans have vey low impedence for their size. Most mp3 players will be OK with them. I've used them with Zen VM and Sansa.

It does leak a lot. Others around you may not like it :P.

You don't have to worry about this. The build quality is excellent. Will last you a lifetime.

Other things you should consider:
These cans are big, like huge. If you have a smallish head, these may not hang onto you :P.
You absoutely need a good sound card for use with these. Onboard audio will not bring the best out of these.
Has a very long burn-in period.

Put the money on an soundcard now. They will make a diff to an existin setup. Plan on these later. Amp is not mandatory on most headphones. Most likely this will be the case here too. Check reviews.
on the other hand, if you got the money, chaos is sellin his hd650.

i assume you guys are all talking abt my pair of AD700 on sale ;)

just to share, i'm using the AD700 hooked up to my rig's Asus Xonar DX soundcard. works wonderfully well, for music, movies and also gaming. and like Udit mentioned, these headphones don't even need a separate headphone amp to sound good ;)

bha....i think i ll skip. n stay happy with what I have :P no use getting it especially since I dont plan to upgrade my onboard. If I get these, i ll need to upgrade the onboard too to get the best use out of them. too much unplanned expense :P

Oh I say just take the plunge ! Amps and all will improve the sound for sure, but the even without amping they should sound just great.

Heck I use my HD 650 (300 ohm vs this 32 ohm) with ONBOARD SOUND CARD !!! (No money for amp right now. :( )

I had an Audigy 4 where the sound was a little better (not a big difference). Now I use it on my Soundmax Onboard and it still sounds better than any darn headphone/earphone I have currently. (Waaay better than the Crossroads Mylar X3i/X3 and my old Philips HP 805).

If you want, you can purchase a cheap dedicated sound card like the Audigy Value or something.

dont confuse me all over again man :(

Decided to save teh cash. Too expensive for my budget anyway. As someone above suggested, i ll prob be better off going for something cheaper in the 1.5-2k range if I want good headphones ;)

Well frankly you're comparing it to crap aren't you? A MRP 599$ top of the line to the x3i? Lol; compare it to the RS-1, DT880 and K701 if you will; don't insult those Senns. If you say it sounds great on onboard, you have no idea just how good they can sound; because IMO they sound crap without amping; but then that's a discerning user for you.

^^As said; spend big once, and enjoy good music forever. Sadly once you spend on an amp and a DAC, you just want better stuff; its the same old hardware upgrade curve; at least for me...

i have an AD700 now, and trying to get another AD700 too !!

This headphone is really worth the money ....

+ Sound quality is TOO GOOD for music

+ Comfortability..very comfortable....big earcups

+ Great Positional audio for games..like wallhacks lolz:P

AD700 doesnt need an AMP to get the best out of it , IT works to its best without needing an AMP ( check out reviews in head-fi.org and hardforum.com )

- It leaks sound a lot..ie it is not meant for gaming on lan or at office or any venue..where a lot of ppl are around you..But IDEAL TO USE AT HOME

- A bit heavy compared to other headphones , so hard to carry around for LAN venues

You will still get decent sound quality on onboard audio..i tested it myself

But when i use it with my Creative X-Fi Xtreme gamer soundcard..the quality is like just too good

My next headphone would be an AD900 when its price comes down:)

^^ Ok I wont confuse you anymore even though I know a Philips SHP 2700 or something like that is no where near the AD700 in sound. But the cost difference is definitely there and it wont sound twice as good as the SHP 2700 and for listing to movies and games I believe the Philips will match if not beat the AD700.

So I hope your mind is made up and you are no longer confused. :)

How about Grado SR-60 for 3.3k
