Hi Forum,

I have a cown J3 which i use with Panasonic HJE900. I am planning to buy on-ear headphones. after searching for a while i came to Audio Technica ATH-M50. My only query is what wud be the response of ATH-M50 with J3.

My music mainly consist of :- Rock, RAP, Sufi (slightly)
I want gud amount of bass from them( not excessive, but good)

Do i need an amp with this setup. ( I already have a fiio E5 :P)

Please clarify the doubt.

Thanks

Your phone will die out easily if you use such headphones with 'em! Since the impedance is slightly on the higher side, a real amp (no, I don't mean E5 :P) will definitely benefit your setup.

The M50 will be somewhat driven by the Cowons but not completely . You will definitely need a good portable amp or a decent entry level DAC + amp to use the M50s.

I think you should be good. I haven't used the cowon j3 but the m50 can be driven with my iPhone and an iPod touch so I would put my money on the j3.

Besides you can always add an amp later if need be.

They do improve slightly if driven thru an amp. But that's with any headphone.

The difference in sound quality by using a neutral amp may not justify the price one would end up paying for it in the case of an M50.

I have tried it with the iPhone / iPhone -> e5 / sflo2 / maverick and come to the above conclusion.

As I mentioned earlier, through amping, they do improve but Slightly. The Dac makes all the difference though.

@ topic-how about fiio e7. ? (I m not very comfortable with used Items :-D. nd a new I basso P3+ @12000+ would be way out of my league.)

@bennysachdev :- i was thinking about the same thing( to buy headphone first and then amp)

Fiio e7 as an amp wont be worth it !

Buy the M50 as benny suggested and see for your self , if you are not satisfied buy an amp later

( Fiio is lunching a portable amp only soon :) )

^^ +1

I regret half the time getting an amp. Would never suggest that route to anyone. :(

The only good thing is that the amp I got can be tweaked to match any new phone or IEM and amping will always help high end IEMs and headphones to take them to the next level. Otherwise its a nuisance to carry around.
