autorun.inf virus removal needed

I didn't read all the replies above, so plz forgive if someone has mentioned it already :).

Firstly, autorun.inf is being created by some executable file. Try to find that file first. Check any suspicious file in the startup through "msconfig".

next, try to check which file is executed in the autorun.inf. For this, just right click on the autorun.inf and click edit, or open it using notepad.

Delete the suspicious files.

Most of the viruses change their names every time, so u have to delete that file every time until all the associated files have been deleted. However, one file that creates all of them always has to be in the startup, so check it using the aforementioned trick and delete it first. Hope this solves ur problem. :)

Software to use in future:

'Usb virus scan' is the best software i know. I'm using it. its just perfect.
 
There is another workaround for autorun virus removal. Just boot pc with win 7 / vista dvd or flash drive and enter repair mode where you will have dos prompt. From there use the (rd /s autorun.inf) command to delete the autorun subdirectory. Then use (del autorun.inf /ashr) command to delete the autorun file. But before doing this you have to remove the virus which creates these files and folders each and everytime you login to windows. Run Hijack this and check and also check msconfig... Thats it. This is how i deal with autorun viruses...

sorry for reviving such an old thread.

my pen drive is infected with autorun.infi and the contents of the drive is showing as a link. I cant open any folder or subfolder of the pen drive. Please help!

^ first of all the file is autorun.inf and not autorun.infi. Next all your data on that pendrive is hidden and a fake shortcut is created. The simplest and fool proof solution is boot from a linux live cd, insert the pen drive and delete all the suspicious file, next copy the important one and format it within linux.
 
the folders are probably hidden, make hidden folders visible through control panel and delete all the the links and the autorun.inf file and unhide the folders. and keep an antivirus on the pc.

Thanks for your suggestions, yes its autorun.inf, written in hurry.

Prev I tried to make the folder visible by checking show all hidden folder, but folders were not visible. But when I unchecked hide protected operating system files all the files were visible. I copied the main folders to a folder in the desktop and ejected the pen drive. Surprisingly I am not able to see the files in the desktop folder when I check the option hide protected system files! How to fix this.

I am using McAfee that came with my DELL laptop.

Please help
