AVI Thumbnails problem

Hey guys,

I recently moved to Vista 64bit and having a problem with avi files.

I have installed Xvid codecs and all as i did in Vista 32 bit but the thumbnails are not generating in explorer for avi files. MPEG videos have thumbnails but AVI don't.

Even Windows media Center does not recognize AVI files. What could be the problem guys?

Things tried: Removed Xvid, installed Vista Codec Packs, still nothing. Tried resetting the thumbnail cache but to no avail.

Please help guys. :huh:
 
R u on Vista 64bit or 32bit coz in 32bit everything works fine for me as well including the thumbnails. Somehow the 32 bit codecs are misbehaving in 64bit environment, i presume.
Also tried the 64bit Vista Codec Pack but nothing happened. :no:

I installed Klite Codec Pack Full but still no thumbnails for AVIs.

Also tried with Vista Codec pack x64 as well. Thumbnails generated for MPEG since Windows first install and now mkv also. But the problem still persists.

Could u tell me which version of Klite u are using?

Also, is Windows Media Center able to play AVI files? In my case it doesnot after installing Klite but after Vista Codec Pack atleast Windows Media Center plays AVI.

Can anybody tell me how to remove file associations for AVI files completely for any player so that all AVI's will be just white icons and when i double click it should ask for options to choose default program? I think this should do the trick. Help guys. :huh:
 
I have both x86 and x64 releases of Klite installed on my Vista x64 :P ... for normal video playback , the x86 codecs are used :P .. while the x64 one's solve the thumbnail preview problem , and works very well with VirtualDub x64 :P ,,, though i don't get thumbnail preview for mp4,mov and mkv :(

Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in the registry and delete ".avi" and "AVIFile" ...
 
If i install these codec packs, and then say everything is sorted out.

But ffdshow uses too much CPU for full HD playback ~70-90%. Hence, i want to use CoreAVC for HD Playback.

How do i assign it the priority so that whenever i play a mkv file, CoreAVC is used instead of ffdshow.
 
Basically u need the ffdshow . That generates the thumbnails for the video files.

I found a fix on one of the forums. Try this , type the following in the run box in start menu

REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL

If ffdshow is necessary, then playing HD videos using Media Player won't be possible except for 720p which would still run fine.

Can't ffdshow be dere and generate thumbnails, while CoreAVC is used for playing HD videos?
Any idea of priority settings. I think someone mentioned in some thread a few days back that we can set priority of the codecs. But how?

@Phoenix, if ffdshow generates thumbnails, why doesn't the thumbnail come when only ffdshow is installed. Why do we have to install the full codec packs?

The shmedia.dll is the problem in Vista64. It's the dll responsible for thumbnail generation in explorer and is somehow not proper in 64bit. Its not detected even if it is dere. So, the registration is not possible in 64bit. :no:

This is true for me too. And also I have Quicktime Pro installed hence I get Quicktime icons all over the .mov and .mp4 files. I have another weird problem where .rmvb files don't play for me. This is true for XP and Vista too. If I install real alternative; the installer says that its already installed; but still if I proceed and install then .rmvb files work properly. No idea why this happens. BTW I have K-Lite Full codec pack 4.1.7; I think its 32 bit.
 
Well guys,

Yesterday, i installed K-lite Codec Pack 64 bit and set it to decode everything except HD videos. And then installed CoreAVC for HD. Now, still the thumbnails didn't come. But then i set the Windows Media Player to 64bit and phew it worked. All the AVI thumbnails started appearing fatafat.

That looked nice. But i am not sure that it entirely happened due to Klite and WMP. Because i also installed Vista Codec Packs, uninstalled it, installed Klite Codec Pack 32bit, uninstalled it and also a registry fix prior to that for fixing AVI thumbnails in Vista. So, not sure of the solution yet.

Will try today on my OS backup and then let u guys know the exact solution if this would be solved. :)

Latest KLite for x86 is v4.17 and for x64 its v1.40 ... the x86 has the options to enable those previews but the x64 doesn't :( .. have to wait i guess :P ..

BTW rmvb works fine here using KLite and WMP :P ...

I just selected the 64 bit version from Program files while fixing the association for avi files. If i select the 32 bit the thumbnails never generated coz that was the default used by the OS.

However, this is not for sure, once i am done, i'll post the exact solution...:)
