Hmmm....so 8 years back I had the most rocking pc in the neigbourhood. I remember a relative telling my parents "what was the need for such an expensive pc" , "whats he going to do with 20gb of hdd space" !!!......well thats history and this is today.....I remember i had (still have) a RivaTNT V3400 Gfx card which costed me 8k that time. Endless hours on Max Payne / Need for Speed 2 / Quake 2 / Quake 3 / UT 2000 / Fifa 2000 / SOF and what not I really don't remember. Other responsibilities took over and finally the gaming 'died'. There came a spur in between and then again its been dead ever since. My weekends are a bit relaxed now and I realized I can definitely push in 3-4 hours of weekend gaming easily for some entertainment and not be left out of the fun.

My current rig is as mentioned in my siggy. I completely understand pushing in a high gfx in my current rig will not suffice. And with even the processor OC'ed at 2.4 Ghz it 'might' would be a bottleneck.

2008-2009 saw / will see some nice game releases and ofcourse I would like to lay my hands on some.

And hence I would need to head in for a decent upgrade to handle the same.

need some real suggestions from the gamers out here.....

Things to consider :

My LCD is a 17" Samsung 713N and I might upgrade to a 19" WS (not more than that for sure).

Apart from the casual gaming rest of the days the PC would have normal usage so I need to ensure that the PC is power friendly as well...

Need not game at full resolution all the time , decent resolution with decent graphix is fine.

TYAIA.

yeah mention the budget,

anyways you've said that youre not a gfx whore,
so go for an HD 4670 and buy a DELL 19" widescreen,
max 15k for this

mate,

get yourself gfx hd4670....the current processor might or maynot be bottleneck if you plan to overclock...Also upgrading your psu might be a better option...

Here I am going to talk from a diff POV on playing some great games in the last 3-4 years u would have missed and also u maybe prone to loose interest again
Also, it will be easy on your pocket

u would have a BIG backlog of games to play from the last 3-4 years ( and many are blockbusters)
so, i would ask u to invest in something like 4670 which can play all old and new games pretty good on 1280* and retain rest of the config

and if u continue to get more time to play and keep the interest, then invest in a better config

completely agree on that point !.....and i was thinking the same as well.....seems like the most logical and best solution for now....i can push the processor to 2.4ghz with ease on my board and suffice my needs to start of with....

So 4670 it is.....so please suggest , brand - specs etc .......also i would like to know how much would the power consumption idleing and on load as well......

Also it would be gr8 for you people to post the "must-play" games of the past.....

hmmm a slightly different opinion here...Why not buy an X360 or a PS3? I was in the same predicament around 8 months back, had a look at the list of upcoming games and realized that almost all of the good one's would be coming to the console first and would be releasing on the PC 6 months to a year later..Another reason why i bought a console is the quality of the ports of certain games...Think about it before u upgrade ur PC

+1 for consoles.

now that's going to be a costly affair as well....for weekend occasional gaming i wouldn't want to spend "specially" on a console....and not the X360 or a PS3 for sure.......however I have the option to choose buying a PS2 , but then on the other hand , say for instance I want to game at night when everyone is sleeping , I cannot use the console and thats where the PC comes to the rescue....totally agree consoles have their + points as well.......I'm considering a PS2 as well now....considering the fact a new unlocked one from alfa shouldnt cost me more than 6-7k's....but then i love pc gaming better :) ......

waiting on the answers regarding the gfx......its very important that the card is lean on power consumption......i wish gfx cards and pc's would run on LPG gas lines    like geysers and lpg ac's

Chuck the idea of the X360. U're going to need a decent LCD/Plasma if u're eyeing on the consoles.

For the HD4670, get anything from Sapphire/GeCube/Palit/Asus/MSI etc. preferably with a local warranty.

All 19"ers are priced way too low nowadays. See if u can get hold of the E198WFP. There seems to be a newer one - S1909W. Rahul @ TheITWares's it listed in his site for 9k although its highly unlikely its the same pricing now. Give him a ring and find out. Pl stay away from Viewsonic whatsoever be the case.

I might get hold of a palit (as i have had good RMA experience with them earlier) , will post a wtb thread on TE if anyones upgrading it will benefit me further on.

I don't like viewsonic too :) , Will get hold of the Dell or will stick to Samsung. If I get a good deal on the Dell then will go in for it for sure.

Different sites showing different power consumption @ idle :( whom to believe

167W at idle :O

9600GT or 4670. Also dont get 19" wide LCD, either get 22" or above or stick with current 17" regular. trust me u wont feel much diff jumping from 17" reg to 19" wide.

my pc table cant take anything more than a 19" ws cause i have my photosmart all in one next to it...and i cant' relocate it elsewhere.....so I guess i will stick to the 17" reg then.......

so for now i guess all i need is a psu and gfx change and im good to go rolling.....

awaiting other responces...

 It's 97W @ idle, 167W @ LOAD in FEAR, acc. to chart and its System, not GPU alone. After adding 4670 UR PC power consumption will increase 30W~ @ idle, 65w~ @ LOAD.

how will it increase just 30w @ idle when the chart says the gfx consumes 97-167w at idle :S

Errr : Big confusion ! .......@ Sidhu.....the chart shows gpu or full pc consumption , totally confused.

@Hanzy - full pc consumption

Screw all, see anandtech,

QX9770 + Intel DX48BT2 + Seagate 7200.9 120GB + HD 4670 + 4 x 1GB Corsair DDR3

Total System Power Consumption

Idle - 67W

Load - 139W
