HD4670 would consume less power than 8600GT..also u need to change your SMPS if your going to use 8600GT...

Hey why dont you just look for a second hand 4850, there are two available in the markets thread, then its game on...I think Aanks is looking at a pretty good price for his. Check it out, and a cm460 will easily handle your system.

u mean to say a Powersafe Gold 400W can't handle a 8600GT and my config in my siggy ? :O

Charts here Actual Power Consumption And Current Requirements - Review Tom's Hardware : How Much Power Does Your Graphics Card Need? say :

8600gt power consumption @ load < HD4670 power consumption @ load

however

8600gt power consumption @ idle > HD4670 power consumption @ idle

:) Even I use the 8600gt .However if you are buying something new I think the 4670 will be better. Remember most of the games of last year and this year might struggle on a 8600gt beyond 1280*1024 resolutions...

Also the powersafe might not be providing the power according to rated specs....

Actual power draw(see sig) for my system does not exceed 220 to 230 watts I guess..

the powersafe should easily handle 8600GT
and 8600GT should handle almost all games @ 1280 (with ur 17")

stay with it and if u get totally hooked into gaming, then consider upgrade

Its better to upgrade your SMPS to altest CM460W which has been rated 80% eff....don't know about powersafe...
Also 8600GT may struggle a bit with latest games...Though it should produce decent fps...:)

this is exactly what i was thinking......i don't want to splurge right away....the 8600gt i have is *new* and even if i sell it off at a decent price i would need to put it approx 1.8-2k to buy a new one....which i don't know would be worth the price im putting it or not.......

i guess i will get started with the 8600gt and then see how it goes.....

on second thoughts i might just get the 4670 once and for all....

how much can i get for my 8600gt ? 256mb ddr3 , un-used boxed pack.

^ Don't sell your 8600GT if you are going to play at 1280. More than sufficient. Will run most of the games at decent settings if not max. The Powersafe 400W will handle the card with ease.

to play the most intensive of games like fc2 or crysis or cod5 etc esp with AA you need a 4870/50 for 12x10 or even lower. games like ut3 may run fine at 2500x1600 with these cards though.

i found out the Palit 4670 is selling for 5150....even if this new card sells for 3k i would not like to splurge additional 2k without knowing if i would game more or even make complete full use of the 8600gt.....so the 8600gt is for keeps....

now people pls suggest some good games i've missed in the past 2 yrs or so..... no strategy games pls :)

FEAR
Rainbow Six Vegas
NFS Series
COD4

However all of these will be really taxing on a 8600GT esp NFS U and Rainbow Six Vegas(this one probably won't even be playable).

The 8600GT will manage ok at 12x10 MAX without SS/AA for FEAR.

please note , i use a non-ws 17" lcd and would most prob game @ 1024x resol. only.

Vegas will still be too heavy on a 8600GT. Try it out nevertheless. Even for gaming at 1024x768 I would recommend a 4670 or better still a 9600GT locally or 4830 KMD for the price.

FEAR2 for instance would probably run at 10x7 Medium on a 8600GT but 12x10 MAX on a 4670.

ok so i guess u mean to say that i atleast need a 4670 for basic gaming....how much do u think i can sell the 8600gt in case i decide to do so ?

Edit : Negative on un-necessary splurges on a new gfx for now....Lets me start of on this 8600GT itself...with a lot of things under my belt I doubt if I would even use the 8600GT to its max....Secondly.....at some point of time my processor will bottleneck the gaming performance even @ full OC @ 2.4Ghz....so if i get a 4850 or a lil heavy GPU then , I will get into the LOOP of splurging upgrades for no reason :bleh: MUST resist......thank u all for the suggestions.....8600gt - s.t.a.y.s

hmm.. i missed the thread before :ashamed: I agree completely with your desicion. Stick to 8600GT. And to anyone who says it sucks at high res. i had one before i changed to 4850 and tht's what i finished crysis on @1440x900. Sure all the bells and whistels were not on. But i dare anyone to say that its horrible. Its just wasn't what it should have been in its time. But there's just no justifying an upgrade specially since hanzy has a close to 8 yr backlog of games to try out. Some of the oldest of :ashamed: which run fine on my old P3 with its riva TNT2 :bleh:

@hanzy - i do recommend a PSU upgrade though. As a future measure. :hap2:

And my recommendations for the last few years in gaming are

1) Half Life 2 series - excellent games although the episodes were way to short

2) Oblivion - its slow on the 8600 but excellent

3) Crysis - you've to see it to believe the eye candy :ohyeah:

4) FarCry - Lil bro of Crysis :P

5) Sins of a Solar Empire - The scale of the game is mind boggling

6) Spore - even larger scale then above :P

Long list.. Get started with these. Should keep you busy for a long while. If you play any specific types of games.. Well let us know :hap2: wb to being a gamer and Happy Gaming :hap2:

EDIT : Check this out.. http://www.techenclave.com/gaming/pc-games-in-2009-best-2008-a-124197.html :ashamed: Can't believe i forgot Assassin's Creed :ashamed:
