I have a 256k connection, (~ 29Kbps) , when I download a file via HTTP or FTP it downloads at the full speed permitted by my bandwidth, how ever when I use a torrent client, it does not download more then 10kbps with spikes to 13/14 .. and in general being 6-8 Kbps only, and practically all surfing etc coming to a standstill.

This (everything else coming to a standstill) happens even when I restrict the torrent client to 5Kbps or even 2 Kbps .. what gives ?:(

What kind of tracker u r using, public or private?
possibly nothing - don't know much (read nothing) about trackers, however I registered to this site recently scenehd.org :: Log in

and even though I been downloading against my name it shows zero download and 100 mb upload,

You need to forward your ports

Yup, but @TheIndian which ISP's connection do u have? Moreover, is it cable or DSL?

1. Cable: In which case u don't have a modem & so you can't port forward...
2. DSL: You have a modem & u can port forward...

@Sandy, pls correct me if i'm wrong :-)

I have cable (RJ45 connection) with a public IP,

K then forget port forwarding. I'm assuming that you are downloading from scenehd, which is a private tracker. Tell me what torrent client (software) you are using. Moreover, download speed depends on the number of seeders. The more the seeder, the better the dwld speed.

I was using uTorrent (same problem, but not registered with anyone, just downloading merrily) , and since I had this problem, switched to Azureus - same problem continued, so registered myself .. no change -

There were more then 10 seeds both the times, (downloaded only one file with uTorrent, second in progress with Azu) - At last look there were 15 seeds , I have since shut it down as I cant even surf (even though restricted to 5Kbps).

edit: just checked .. 35 seeds

K, then do the following:
1. Register with IPTorrents.com & download any torrent with lots of seeders
2. Download the latest uTorrent 1.7.5 software & make the following changes in the Options->Preferences section.
3. In the Connection section make sure Add uTorrent to Windows Firewall exceptions (Windwos XP sP2 or later only) is checked. Also if you have a firewall, set your firewall to enable uTorrent to connect both ways, i.e. inbound & outbound traffic.
4. In the BitTorrent Additional BitTorrent Features section disable (uncheck), the following: Enable DHT Network, Enable DHT for new torrents, Enable Local Peer Discovery, Enable Peer Exchange, Limit local peer bandwidth but leave Ask tracker for scrape information checked.
5. Now download the file which you got from IPTorrents.com..

All the best...n get back with the result...

Try using bitcomet. friend had a similar prob with utorrent, he gets good speeds with bitcomet now.

Am going to experiment with this in a while,

In the meanwhile someone suggested to use flashget and I did - Right now its hovering between 25-30K sometimes dropping to 15-18 and sometimes hitting 35k , at the same time I tried uTorrent , and Azu , (only one at a time) and neigther hit more 10 (MAX) and blocked my surfing - btw right now am surfing too, lil slower then normal, but its surfable. Not a total full stop. :hap2: :hap2:

UPDATE: Problem/discrepancy accounted for.

My ISPs idea of 256 unlimited is Upload + Download TOGETHER   as 256k Which explains everything.

Now what do we say to that ?
