Auto refusing to go even to the station now has become a very common practice in my area. Wish the police came here and did an "Xpose". The proper kind, I mean....

What is that saying ? ' buyer beware'

find a busy road, shop around (this means ask about 10), if you can't do that then you're in a sellers market.

set the price at the start if they won't use the meter. if you have a rough idea about the distance and the route then you can work out the fare yourself without a meter. The std charge is for 2 kms, adjust as appropriate.

They always go on about luggage, the first 20kg is free.

only 1 guy out of 10 has ever assaulted (pushing me with his hand, he's half my size and i laughed at him) me when i refused to pay for a jacked up meter.

One of the best things about my hometown (calicut) is the auto guys invariably go by the meter.

OTOH loading/unloading union guys are the total villians just about anywhere in Kerala.

Well at least some good things done by the cops ! I had been to Mumbai a couple months back, even at 11pm the auto drivers didn't ask for any extra money - just went by meters. The main problem with Bangalore is no regulation whatsoever by the govt/municipality. Even the govt controlled BMTC bus prices go up like fireworks each 4 months or so.
