Bangalore: Internet under Rs. 500/month

I'm a resident of Bangalore.

I moved away from home to my college's hostel a couple of months back.

When I was at home, I could fully exploit BSNL's night time UL and my download count used to often cross 50GB in a month with a 2.5GB daytime limit :hap2:

Now I visit home only on weekends and spend most of the night sleeping. Other than that I come here during vaccations but even then I don't work at night anymore.

Now I'm thinking of changing from my current plan to another. Whenever I come home most common activity is gaming. And downloading of assorted files. But no more midnight torrenting and distro-hopping at home. Also, the 2AM to 8AM is not feasable with my sleeping patterns these days.

So please suggest me good plan to migrate to.

I'm open to anything as long as price is within Rs. 500 including any rental for modem, phone, etc (already have BSNL landline can't change).

I don't mind lower speeds but want to be able to download ~250MB everyday during daytime. Basically just heavy surfing and gaming. Everyday.

I'm also open for non broadband always-on connections (like the pesky 64/128 schemes) ONLY if its much inside my budget (like Rs. 300 or so).

I'm looking for something like maybe railwire (256kbps shared 1:4 for Rs. 320/month) but unfortunately its not available in my locality.

Please give me suggestions.

Even local cable wallah connections will do. Just give me normal rates charged.

bump. nobody in bangalore ? :(

ALl unlimited plans which are inexpnsive and 256kbps are atleast 750 bucks here. Chk out sify plans though; i think they too haveonly night unlimited

Yup Gowtham's rite, unfortunately there no cable walla or any service provider provides BB UL for .5k :(

& go for airtel ul 256 kbps forget BSNL in bangalore :@

Hmmm... What abt hathway and cable wallah internet ? My sis has this new habit of reading manga online. 512kb per page. Current 2.5 bandwidth not at all enough.

Even if speed is low like 160kbps I dont mind as long as spice stays under 400 or 300.

@chiron: no idea. Some sites have high res color while others with black and white use lot lesser bandwidth.

And there is NO railwire near my place.

I am considering youtelecom now. They have a plan under 500 it seems. Any reviews ?

64's dialup zone. No way am I going that low. Besides 499 is too much for such crap. Would put it at 200.

dude.....try reliance broadnet..they have a plan of 649 for 300kbps unlimited and 150 freee calls.

reliance also offers 100 kbps for 400 bucks..

Seems attractive.
Do I have to pay phone rental ?
And can't they knock off the free calls offer for something cheaper ?
I already have a landline so don't want to pay extra for no reason...

No,u don't have to pay for phone rental.

But,u have to tax extra.

Nope, they will not knock off the free calls offer for something cheaper.

Actually free call of Rs.150/-(per call cost Rs.1.1/-)

No one want landline, but we have no choice.....:(

Updates: Neither YOU Telecom nor ACT Broadband nor RailWire is available in my area.

Budget remains the same.

I am seriously starting to consider Reliance Dialup Unlimited @ Rs. 7/day. But then again, its better to simply buy a BSNL SIM and use the portal browsing trick for unlimited but low speed 30kbps browsing.

Any other options please ?

And yes, I'm considering Reliance 300kbps UL but need to know a few details:

1. It says 150 free calls. It means 150 pulses or 150 minutes ?

2. Call charge is Rs. 1.1 means 1.1 for 3 min landy and 1 min all else right ?

And their FUP says this:

For the purpose of preserving customer system and network resources, Reliance has

locked ports 137, 138, 139, 445, 5554, 9996, and 1434 for both TCP and UDP

estinations as a security measure. Reliance reserves the right to block any other ports

epending upon vulnerability assessment and threat analysis done by it’s security team

What does the above mean ? What are these ports commonly used for ?

When you can use BSNL GPRS (lol), why can't you use Airtel's 64kbps Unltd..?!

And are you sure Reliance is available in ur area?

In my area BSNL and AirTel are 100% available.

Not too sure about reliance but there is a good probability. Dunno CC phone no though so can't check.

BTW, after removing free calls, my current phone rental and internet rental is Rs. (180-50) for phone and Rs. (500) for internet. Now my dad works in a govt company so he should get the 20% bill discount which he has not yet activated. So I figured that the 750c 256kbps UL plan can be ideal because it includes rental of phone and with discount price comes down to Rs. 600.

This is the easiest option I have in Mind.

What do you guys think ?

It works out to be CHEAPER than Reliance @ Rs. 650 but I won't get those incredably low pings and get 300-256=44kbps speed less.

Or has BSNL improved in the 256kbps Unlimited plan ? Does it still disconnect often or can I rely on it for constantly on connection ?

maybe its just me but i dont trust reliance/tata, i would buy any of their service even if they offer for free!

since u already have bsnl, y dont u u look at their unlimited tariff's.

as far as bangalore goes, airtel by far has the best service here..i am using airtel for over 5 yrs for very little downtime..but there service ain't cheap!
