The upcoming quad core Opteron processors from AMD draws less power than the current dual core Opterons and AMD is already bragging about it.

During the AMD press conference at Computex today, a demo of the new Opteron's showed them as being much more power efficent than the current dual core processors.

AMD had set up what was apparently two identical systems, one with two dual core Opteron's and one with two quad core Opteron's. The quad core system drew 214W at full load, while the dual core system drew 259W. This varied slightly, but overall the quad core system was some 50-55W more power efficent.

Quick and Dirty AMD K10 Cinebench

Earlier today, AMD announced that it successfully demonstrated Barcelona across the server market. The company did not publically state how fast the processor was running, the stepping of the processor, the processor thermal envelope or the eventual ship date.

We had the opportunity to benchmark the AMD Barcelona, native quad-core on an early stepping. We only had a few minutes to test the chip, but we were able to run a quick Cinebench before we were instructed to leave.

The AMD benchmark ran on a single-socket, K10 CPU running at 1.6 GHz on NVIDIA's nForce Professional 3400 chipset. According to the system properties, the AMD system used 4GB of DDR2-667.

The most similar Intel system we could muster up on such short notice was an Intel Xeon 3220. The Xeon X3220 is clocked at 2.4 GHz, and ran on Intel's Garlow workstation chipset (Intel X38). This system property profile stated the system utilized 4GB of DDR2-800.

Cinebench completed the default benchmark in 27 seconds for the 1.6 GHz K10; 17 seconds for the Intel Xeon X3220. The Kentsfield Xeon was 58% faster with a 50% higher clock frequency for Cinebench.
 
Well, wasnt it expected? :).

I guess July will see me getting a Kentsfield, and maybe a Penryn a few months after that too.
 
DAAMIT, this is just not happening, with Barcelona moving to Q4 07 that means we'll get desktop proccys Q1 or Q2 08

By then Intel will have something better too....DAAMIT

AMD Phenom delayed until 1Q08
AMD's Phenom processors were originally planned to begin test-production between September and October, and to start shipping in November this year. However, AMD may now be planning to postpone Phenom's launch date to the first quarter of 2008, according to sources at motherboard makers.

AMD intends to modify its process technology to increase the yield rate and frequencies of Phenom processors in order to improve the competitiveness of the CPUs against Intel's Penryn family, said the sources.

However, AMD has responded to this report by stating that the company's official launch schedule for Phenom remains the second half of 2007 and this schedule has not changed. The company added that it has not contacted motherboard makers concerning a delay to the schedule.

AMD Barcelona set to ship in August
AMD has announced that it will begin shipping quad-core Opteron (Barcelona) server CPUs in August, and expects products from its platform partners to become available in September. AMD highlighted that it plans to release both standard and low-power versions, with frequencies at launch ranging up to 2GHz.
As noted in earlier reports, Barcelona CPUs are designed to be swap-in compatible with existing AMD Opteron platforms, with only a BIOS update required. AMD stated that the new CPUs could offer up to 70% more performance than previous Opteron CPUs in certain database applications, and up to 40% more in some floating-point workloads. However, the company did not give any specific details regarding under what circumstances customers can expect to see these benefits.
AMD also revealed that it expects to follow the initial launch with higher frequency products in the forth quarter.

Chipzilla also in August will release a low voltage version of its four-core Xeon code-named Clovertown that runs at 2.0GHz, while consuming just 50W max power. By contrast, AMD's upcoming standard edition Opteron will eat up 95W, while the low power chip will eat up 68W. Intel's new 2.0GHz chip will also boast a 1333MHz front side bus, up from today's 1066MHz FSBs, according to our sources.
 
Say hello to the Phenom FX-90 and FX-80 series
AMD’s latest roadmap reveals model numbers for upcoming Phenom FX processors. Under the new naming scheme, the AMD Phenom FX lineup consists of the Phenom FX-80 and FX-90 series. AMD designates the Phenom FX-80 series for single processor systems while the FX-90 takes on 4x4 dual processor systems.

AMD plans to launch two Phenom FX-90 series processors in Q1 2008. The two Phenom FX processors carry the FX-91 and FX-90 names. The AMD Phenom FX-91 will have a clock-speed between 2.4-to-2.6 GHz and will sit on a 3.6 GHz HyperTransport 3.0 bus. The lower Phenom FX-90 will have a clock-speed between 2.2-to-2.4 GHz with a slower HT3 bus. AMD is unsure of the Phenom FX-90’s HT3 bus, but roadmaps indicate HT3 speeds excess of 3.2 GHz. The two Phenom FX-90 series will drop into Socket 1207+ motherboards.

AMD plans one Phenom FX processor for Socket AM2+ platforms. The AMD Phenom FX-80 is essentially the FX-90 for single-processor systems. The Phenom FX-80 will clock in between 2.2-to-2.4 GHz and have a HT3 bus speed in excess of 3.2 GHz. All Phenom FX processors share similar feature sets, with 512KB of L2 cache per core and a shared 2MB L3 cache. The TDP of Phenom FX processors are still to be determined.

Expect AMD to pull the wraps off the Phenom FX-90 series in Q1 2008 with its upcoming FASN8 socket 1207+ platform. AMD expects to launch the Phenom FX-80 earlier, in the November-to-December timeframe.

If this is true, then AMD has a winner at hand... Lets see some real world benchmarks for Barcelona now!!!

those results are just projected ones.. u never know if they will really perform tht well.
