Hi guys

its like everyday that i hear people complain how Torrent Trackers have become a b**ch to seed on

Our Indian ISPs have severely FUPed our survivability in those Private trackers where we get our daily dose from

so i thought i would post an entirely different method of getting the content you want

Its Newsgroups

Usenet newsgroup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (for detailed info)

Pros

Faster Speeds

No Seeder dependency

Secure connection over HTTPS are available

Tougher to block by your ISP

Anonymity

You don't need to seed-back or shit like that

Cons

Retention depends on your provider, for paid it may go as high as 1200 days but for free just over 380 days

Existence of fake files (to avoid this you should choose a user indexed site)

now onward to the small guide

First you need a Server or NewsGroup Provider

There are numerous providers out there like Astraweb,Giganews,Blocknews etc

they have retention running into 1200 days with 97% average completion rate

and are not free, you'd have to pay anything between 12$ to 20$ for a month of server access.

However if you want a free provider, you can try

XS Usenet - Free Usenet provider but the speeds are limited to 1Mbit for free usage and only just over 380 days retention

which means you can download files which have been uploaded a year ago at most

next you need a Client

since you are a newbie i will recommend you UNZBin

it is simple intuitive (resembles uTorrent) and does the job beautifully

or you can try SabNZBD+ the best newsgroup client available

though there might be a learning curve involved

Lastly you need some place to download those NZB files from(NZB is to newsgroups as .torrent files are to Bittorrent)

Personally i like FilesharingTalk.com

it is a forum where you need to register to gain access to their NZB database

you can check out NZBsrus and NZBclub too

That's all you need to get started right now

in the next phase of this tutorial(2-3 weeks from now) i will introduce two new softwares that will come in handy

QuickPar and NZB Completion Checker

Quickpar helps repair an incomplete download

NZBCC checks whether the file in question is indexed fully at your Provider before the downloading begins

my guide is just a newbie friendly and somewhat incomplete version when compared to those guides

Thanks for the guide, I was planning to go for usenet for some new comics i wanted, could not find it on BT, but had no idea about usenet. Found them quickly on usenet.

usenet is being actively troubled by courts all over western countries as mainly being used for distributing pirated /illegal material.
the service is good, NNTP is great for running a forum, but comes with its own set of problems.

When u say nzb be like torrents file does nzb resume download in case of connection drop?

if ur downloading movies and stuff then fileserve/filesonic would be more cheaper then newsgroups and it has variety of contents.. better go for a multidownloader like nopremium.pl,

i've been into newsgroups before and i didn't find it to be economical

if you don't have to pay for it then it is :)

From the links that sourav has given, firstly its free, secondly the speeds are capped at 1mbps, which is more or less my max connection speeds. So good, yeah.

Whats the protocol used here for data transfer I'm concerned more when file size are huge example 5GB single file , is there a hash check which verifies the data downloaded ? Since HTTP has lot of File corruption issues.

i dunno about the protocol or the technical details
but as you've said file completion issues are prevalent
the file you want to download may not be present entirely in the servers your Newsgroup Provider
for this reason people use multiple newsgroup providers
one unlimited account with fixed/monthly fees
and another block(limited usage) account with unlimited validity period as a backup server

But in case more than 95% Blocks available
every NZB you DL from an user indexed site will also contain multiple .Par files
when the download is completed SabNZBD+ or uNZBin will use the smallest .par2 files to check for archive integrity (quick Check)
if it passes the check its well and good(i.e. as all blocks are available)
if it doesn't, then your client will download the bigger .Par files to replace the missing/damaged blocks

in other words, if the file is completed more than 95% by your primary server,
chances are that the .Par files will do the work for you automatically
but if you are looking for a really old file, then you need a premium block account as a backup to provide the missing blocks

p.s.
i may have done a less than satisfactory job of explaining these things
but the guides at FST are much better written

Added
just wrote a big post at the other thread,
thought i would ctrl+c it here so that everything stays here

you cant compare Newsgroups with Private Trackers
as their focus are completely different with some overlaps

in the case of newsgroups, if you opt for a premium(paid) service you can get access to virtually everything which has been released in the past 3&1/2 years
there is no Ratio to be maintained, no seeders to be nagged, nothing
if it is scene, its available on a newsgroup collection but you have to know how to search for them
as the process involved is a bit more complex than torrenting which is simple point and click and start

but this complexity has its advantages too
Exclusive releases like that of Ebp, CtrlHD, CHD, NPW, Cinephilia which are bound to specific trackers are available quite freely in newsgroups
so you don't have to be L33T torrenter to make L33T downloads available to you

you can use Mysterbin.com and Binsearch.info
they are the TPB of Newsgroups
just use the following parameters in the filter

Advanced Search
Query:ebp
Maximum Age of Post:365 Days
Size Between: 3000MB<10000MB
Only show Collections
Only show Collections that have an .nfo

here ebp is an exclusive uploader for HDBits
you can change it to CtrlHD, NPW etc etc

But i will still say nothing beats Torrents in matters of convenience and ease of use and availability of content
i will use newsgroups only to Complement my torrenting not to replace it by entirety
or that is till we get HTTPS in torrenting or ISPs start sending seize and desist letters

I really want to know how well does NZB handle resume downloads what if my internet goes off at night for 30 minutes and comes back torrents since using p2p can handle it quite well , similar thing possible ?

yes, as i said before connection dropping is no issue
it will resume everything just like utorrent does as soon as the connection comes back
i've downloaded over 70 GBs in November with frequent disconnection problems (BSNL)
your client will handle it automatically don't worry

yes you have to enter these details
enter the number of connections as 2
Type SSL

be advised that you will only get 1Mbps speed which is much less than what your connection is capable of
if this works out fine, you can consider getting a Premium unlimited usage account where you can get speeds in excess of 12MBps(100Mbps) 1200days retention and 30 connections

Bump. Good guide.

Astraweb has a special going, for 96USD/year.

Damn good deal.

last i heard they were also offering a 1TB block for something likle 50 USD

great for people to use it as fillservers (recent poor completions and notwithstanding) or for people for whom 1 TB will last more than a year

Problem with Usenet nowadays has been that the release don't come quickly on usenet
