Model: SS-DX30 - 6Ohms.

These are no match for my Sony SS-GN88D. These bookshelves with a 8 inch subwoofer + two 3 inch midwoofers + 2 inch tweeter & weighed 9 kilos each rated at 150W @ 6 ohms. GN88D will produce way more base than DX30 due to its 8 inch subwoofer.

While your Sony SS-DX30 has a 5 inch woofer + 5 inch midrange + 2 inch tweeter & weigh 4.5 kilos.

Anyway both of the above bookshelves are no match for Warfe's & Tannoys.

I know that the warfe Tannoys and the rest are in a different league, but right now, there is NO music at home as the Sony unit has quit. The Sony speakers will just be a stopgap until I can get more funds for speakers.

EDIT:

Anyone with any experience with the Marantz PM5004?

I looked at the Yamaha, but it's slightly out of budget! What started out as a 20K budget for both amp + speakers has not become a 20K budget for amp, with speakers being added in some time.

I shall still try to listen to the Yamaha though.

Achieving audio nirvana has no end!!! Recently i listened to a pair of B&W 800 series floorstanders costing 25 lakhs, paired with my Yamaha DSP-A2070 in stereo mode. Something I will savor all my life.

Read this thread if you have time : Yamaha DSP-A2070

The Norge Millenniums are very underrated speakers. To me they are better & more powerful than equivalent Warfe's. With 15K bookshelves, Millennium's are the speakers for me.

I just finished reading your thread! That is a real BEAST of an amp you go there! :) If you ever plan on selling that amp, lemme know! :P

I plan on listening to as many setups I can before I decide! :)

I've heard the 5004 extensively and its a great amp provided you have a matching warmer source and speakers. It sounded too bright with the Paradigms as well as PSBs but played rather friendly with the Old Tannoy Mercury F1 Custom.

BTW recenltly had a chance to listen to a weird combination of Usher S520 (23k) and a Topping TP20(5k?) and boy did they dance. The ushers were the best speakers at the price-point and somehow even at 86db sensitivity the Topping drove them rather musically. This was at HFV Pune meet.

What would pair well with the 5004? Missions? Warfs?

I still can't find anywhere in chennai to audition them :(

Would you be interested in a few months old setup ? I've Cambridge Audio Azur 550A and Mordaunt Short Aviano-2 BS combo for sale. Can sell them together for 33K.

I must say the second hand route seems very very tempting, but I would like to start the first few steps with new equipment! This endeavor is partly a birthday gift for my dad :)

Wharfs may pair well with them. A big word of caution on the Wharfs is not everyone likes their dry signature. Sounds very uninspiring to me at least. Again if you are spending anything around 20K please give the Ushers a chance, other contenders could be the PSB Alphas and the Paradigm Atoms.

I see no harm in used stuff, you usually get very good deals and most equipment is well-cared for.

To pimp my wares as well - I got a third (or fourth) hand Dynaudio monitor pair along with a suitably matched DIY power (note the word 'power', not an integrated) amp I'm looking at letting go of on the cheap. Not pretty/convenient like mass market stuff but much better sounding and discounted well below price of new. Does not meet your budget, but does not beat it by all that much. You may also have to adjust your expectations a bit in terms of connectivity - PM me for the details if you have a glimmer of interest.

Update:

I went to PRO music yesterday. They didn't have anything for demo/audition..

Suggested that I go for Boston Acoustics speakers, but didn't give the exact model. He didn't have Norge's new price list, and on the whole said they are more into studio recording and stuff, and generally didn't seem to interested.

Next on the list is Decibel and then Audio people, profx and Grand Cinema - Have I missed any other places?

Meanwhile, I have been exploring the DIY route for amps after talking to cranky.

Check the Onkyo showroom in Alwarpet, the first floor they sell speakers and amps (non-onkyo) I think they had ATC and few other brands

beware of pro-fx they are reported to have palmed-ff demos to unsuspecting customers.

Paradigm is an excellent VFM brand.

Thanks guys for all the help!

I just picked up a marantz PM5004 :-)

We'll be hooked up to Sony bookshelves for now though.
