Anyone with a BENQ 1640 writer tried the drive with a RPC1 firmware. In case anyone does not know - this makes the drive region free.

The RPC1 firmwares for this drive as well as lots of other makes and models are available on this page... the BENQ 1640 firmwares are on the bottom of the page....

http://tdb.rpc1.org/
Read this page before flashing the RPC1 firmwares....

no need for RPC1 for me...i hardly watrch movies :)

I do... a lot...too much actually... I have about 25 movies to ...er....uhum.... "backup". So I would not like the drive to get region locked after the 5th one - but I hesitate to flash the RPC1 firmware in case I run into any problems.

BTW isnt there any official Benq firmware which includes region free support?

I dont think any hardware manufacturer can officially support RPC1 - that would defeat the whole purpose of having Regions in the first place. :)

some info abt rpc

DVD Region Locking is a system used to control which DVD movies play on which DVD Players.

Region 1 - The U.S., U.S. territories and Canada
Region 2 - Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland
Region 3 - Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong
Region 4 - Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Caribbean
Region 5 - Russia (okay, former Russia), Eastern Europe, India, most of Africa, North Korea, Mongolia
Region 6 - China
Region 7 - Unused
Region 8 - Airlines, Cruise Ships

This means that movies from Region 1 (USA & Canada) WILL NOT play on a DVD drive intended for regions 2-6. Effectively, you can only play Region 1 discs on Region 1 DVD drives, Region 2 discs on Region 2 DVD drives and so on.

BTW, why don't all u 1640's start using the CDFreaks BenQ forum. Am sure u will get lotsa info there.

I have been a member of CDFREAKS Forum since early 2000 and in the last couple of days when TE was shut for updating I spent the full time there picking up info on the 1640. Great forum and got some good info. Including the topic of this thread - RPC1 firmware.

@apollyon/SunMan ... flashed the RPC1 firmware works fine. WHEW !! I am relived to know that the drive will now not get locked at Region 6 if that is the 5th disk !! Region 6 = China :)

actually was searching for 1640 RPC1 firmware...saw this was in beta section, so didnt try it....
