Thanks Stalker, but even if they launch some of those routers soon,

1. They will be very much more expensive, and

2. My existing laptops will not be compatible right?

Am I missing something?

almost all sites have negative reviews , check TE's Hot deal section and then the HS18 thread , rest your wish

Yes, I guess you are right. Got my S2 at 24K fro Yebhi in October. Great deal but required too many calls and e-mails before they shipped it finally. Dunno whether the stress is worth it :-)

Going thru 3-4 pages of the Mouthshut reviews is scary. While saving 500 bucks is fun, I don't think it is worth the pain of fighting with the store. Flipkart delivers in 24 hours. Just my take.

Thanks guys for all the help and suggestions.

Got the Asus RT-N13U and it was a breeze to set up. Range is not greater than my old g router, but speeds are

1gb transfer from wired to wireless client

2:25 same room

3:00 from my room which is 2 walls and 20 feet away from router [this is what I had measured with my old router and would take about 12 minutes]

Wireless to wireless, same room 5:30 for 1GB transfer but repeat showed 4 minute. Don't know why so much variation.

Still my favourite armchair has scratchy connectivity, so am looking at options to increase the reach, either by shifting the router to a more central location in the house, or by getting a repeater.

By the way my cousin measured speeds of the Airport, and he got 5:40 for 1GB same room wireless to wireless, so the Apple is about the same speed as the Asus.

Would these be what I should expect? Or should I re look the settings?

Just lifted the router out of the desktop clutter and I transfered a 1gb file 20ft across 2 walls in 2min30sec, and retested with the old router at same location and got 12min30sec. Pretty good value for money upgrade I think.

Also the small relocation has improved RSSI at my scratchy connection area. Might not need a repeater.

Deepak I know you already bought it but just writing for general people like me who come here to just read. First reviews are written mostly by the people who are discontent. Hardly someone gives review that "all is well". So you will find reviews mostly bad, even if you check flipkart's review you will find some discontent people.

Secondly HomeShop18 is a TV18 company, same company that owns CNBC TV 18 and other channels. BTW : I ordered my ASUS N13U today from them with a discount of 500, total of just 2699. That's almost 15% off the flipkart's price. If I have bad experience then I will get back to this post.

The Asus n13U has horrid reviews in newegg.com. Is newegg reliable for reviews ?.

Usually yes, Newegg reviews are more reliable than say Amazon. More tech savvy customers at Newegg. Newegg is a great store by the way.

I am not totally happy with the N13. Great speeds, but range is not that good, and I just can't get the repeater mode to function. Someone else at TE also has the same issue with repeater mode.

I dunnno about the reviews from newegg, but IMO, its a good buy at sub 3K cost. Range is ok in my 850 sq ft house, but I could improve it slightly by shifting it from the corner to a more central point. :!

However, I cannot detect the signal in my neighbours flat, but that could be due to the reinforced concrete walls.

@deepakrao - Which 300 Mb/s router should i go for which will make me totally happy ?. Dont make me faint by saying "NONE".

I even researched about the DIR 655 and since you state that newegg reviews can be completely relied upon, i have to drop the idea of going for it based on horrid reviews . But the DIR 655 is admired by many people who had bought it in the past. I think the product lost its charm in the recent days and it deserves a prefix of SUB for its STANDARD...

Seriously nowadays its very difficult to chose a wifi router which can work flawlessly. My concerns are not much. I am not asking for a wifi router whose signal can crawl upto 4 or 5 floors. All i want is just for my floor and the floor below mine along with a transfer speed of atleast 10 MB/s within a radius of 15 meters. The latter requirement is required only for my floor. This is what i need.

Is there any such one within a range of 5k ?.
