Its been more than 3 years since I last used any kind of an antivirus software. And trust me, in these last 3 years not once has my PC been infected by a virus. Ok, it did get infected once but that was due to a pen drive. If you just use some common sense while browsing, Windows firewall is good enough.

Go for emsisoft A-Squared Anti-Malware placed 2nd in the number of viruses detected. I know you haven't heard of the name but its far better than any anti-virus. They have a free version too.

1st is Panda. Kasp. & others are way lower. I use Emsisoft on my 7 Win2k8 R2 Servers (offcourse i have the paid one).

Free Solution>> Comodo Internet Security - comes with the legendary comodo firewall one the best in firewall, using it from last few months with Winsows 7 64 bit.working great

I mainly use Avast, the new version is awesome and is also lightweight.
And in combination to that I use Comodo Internet Security (best firewall you can get for free).

Oh and being a hard core linux fan, I'd recommend using Linux if you want to stay virus and windows free

THIS! is THE most hasslefree and effective anti virus of ALL the big and small and expensive brands I've tried. It's caught viruses for me where ALL others detected nothing. And its free and only 17mb so for me

Put these 3 on and I never have to worry about anything.

I would recommend ESET NOD32 or Smart Security. I have been using it for years and its very good.
