A friend of mine had almost finalized buying a panasonic FZ18 when some further research revealed that the shutterbugs in our friend circle actually ended up taking more pics on their camphones( Se K750 and Nokia 5610 than their cams ( sony H2 and Canon S5IS) respectively. Now he just wants something to take good looking pics , so he's decided to shift his budget to a good camphone.

Seems his choice is limited to the SE K790/810 and Nokia 5610/N73

are there any better camphones to be had? Chances are he'll be getting one of the SE's

The SE K810's a good one although the K800 shud be more or less the same w.r.t cam specs.

I've a K810 but TBF the K800 is a better buy cos of the better keypad.. I felt it tat way..

The 5610 doesn've a Xenon flash although for a Music Fone, its a good choice..

Forget the N73. All my hostel mates had one prob or the other with tat fone. The ME tat is. Doesn've the Xenon flash either.

Problems like:

1. Cam shutter problem; cam switches off even wen shutter is on.

2. S/w problem.

3. Spkr problem.

he is , but even though he's a dedicated shutterbug, fact is , you cant lug his cam everywhere , and a good camphone serves his purpose more.

He didnt like the 810 because of the crappy keypad. 800 wasnt in stock :(

@ rams_716- not looking for sub 3MP phones. yup , will be getting an SE. but the keypad on the 810 is a deal breaker

K810iz got a gr8 keypad dude...awsm key spacing...on d other hand d K790i aka K800i has got a rly cramped keypad...:ohyeah:

Ask him to chk out d dummy models for both d phones..! :)

Uh sounds a li'l high by 2k???

Univercell in Cbe retailed the thing for 18k I believe..

Check Univercell greenie n get back..

K850'll blow virtually anything away..

It'll kick its kith-n-kin's a$$ to the moon.. :P Dont even think of Nokias here if u're gettin it for 18k... :)

What the hell is going on here! Did your friend leave his common sense somewhere?

OBVIOUSLY, your friend's friends take less photos with their cameras as compared to their cameraphones. Why?

1. 'Cuz they take their phone EVERYWHERE and because they're pocketable. You cannot pocket a Canon S3/S5/SX100, Panasonic FZ series or a Sony H2/H5 or ANY superzoom camera - unless of course, you're a world-famous hip-hop star with anti-fit jeans starting south of your buttcrack.

2. Next, WHY 90% of people recommending buying a huge, bulky camera like the S5 is beyond my comprehension. Cuz 90% of the shots that people take don't require that monster camera and they end up becoming bigger burdens than something to enjoy photography, normal occasions with. (I even recall Superczar's post on DSLRs which was a justified post. :) )

3. The mass idealogy behind buying an S5-type cam is similar to "bigger means better". No, not really. All of Canon/Sony/Panasonic's smaller, lighter, slimmer zooms provide the same image quality as the bigger zooms only with 1. lesser zoom, 2. far lesser manual controls, and 3. weaker flashes.
HENCE:

Please ask your friend to buy a high-end to medium range Canon IXUS, Panasonic FX, or Sony W series camera. All of them are slim, Li-ion enabled, huge-LCD screens and immensely pocketable. All of them deliver top-notch image-quality.

And the worst of them is much, muuuuch better than any cameraphone out there.

I own a Sony K790i and a Sony H2 as you well know. :)

Dude, wake up and smell the common sense. A big camera is not necessary for great pics, but a "camera" is necessary. :D

PS: Recommendation? I am guessing your friend was ready to buy a FZ18 for around 20k or thereabouts so:
1. 9-11k for a Sony W120/W130.
Here you go >> Indiaplaza.in : Electronics - Cameras - Sony Cybershot DSC W120 - 7 MP & 4x Optical Zoom
2. 9-10k for a SE K790i if he still wants it that badly.

sony K790i is a really decent phone when it come to pics [I'll upload some if you want me to] as i have used it a lot from my friend.... get it or the K810i which is better than it......K850i is not imho at all worth its price tag....better divide it as d_payne says..

D_Payne's post makes sense, but whatever said and done you will not carry your camera everywhere. However thin it is, you can carry your mobile AND slim camera EVERYWHERE.

and one day he might just regret not buying a good camera phone when he didnt have his super slim camera with him.

The k790i is the best of the lot. No doubt abt that. I am using that phone and honestly, there isnt anything wrong with it apart from the keypad.

Greenie, you know how I landed up spending 3 hrs with those Ferraris, lambos, Porsches, right ? I was on my way for a walk !! Now, on my way there I wont be carrying a camera however slim it is. But most people do carry their phone. I got lucky and luckily had an amazing camera phone to capture quite simply the best day of my life.

I still say that the phone became worthwhile in that ONE day alone. If it had died the next day too, it wouldnt be a problem.

Anyway, upto your friend.

PS: Looks like I kinda misunderstood d_payne's post

Anyway, I said what I wanted. All the best !!

I'd given a best-of-both-worlds suggestion which I can easily assume that most people who couldn't give a flyin-fart about DOF/shutter/aperture would prefer. :)

As I said, take the great camera and the great cameraphone. And I really don't think I should harp on the K790i's abilities as a cameraphone any longer than ALL my posts in that photography thread do I? :D
Payne

no matter how small the cam is , you can NOT carry it around all the time. there are times when you forget it.

Then there are places like @ work where cams arent allowed ( but camphones are :S) I do agree that a camphone cannot substitute a good Camera, but a camphone makes more sense in real world usage. :)

and nikhil has already posted what i meant to say. When we go out travelling/know in advance of a photo opportunity , the H2 and S5 will be coming along anyway :D

^^ Dude, are you sure you read my post properly? :) Nikhil, also said that he misunderstood my post. :D I think I have communication issues now. :s

I said buy a good slim camera AND the cameraphone. Nothin' like it.

Nah, if he's got a camphone for convenience, then that's enough for him :)

and he can borrow the more expensive kit any time ;) so it effectively works out as a sort of best of both worlds way :D
