TPU case hands-down (Silicon cases just suck in comparison)! But I am not sure if you would be able to find it locally! eBay.in would be your best bet!

Expensive. I bought a silicon/tpu case from palika for 500 bucks and picked up a 10" net book sleeve by amkett for another 600 bucks...

I wonder if the new SmartCovers will work with the original iPad. That would surely be a good case/cover.

I gt a cheap leather one from heeera panna yesterday.it kinda does the job but is not very comfortable.costed me 400 rs.

Always put a screen protector on the iPad. Such a huge and beautiful screen, not to be spoiled by unsightly scratches.
