Linea is a winner in my eyes.

It is the sturdiest of all the cars. My friend who owns both Linea and city jokes that the door of the Linea alone weighs equal to the whole of city. He had a sideways collision with an Accord once and swears by the build quality of the Linea. The accord rammed into one of the doors of his Linea at around 40 kmph but they were unscathed. Even the airbags didn't deploy.

Plus if I am right, the diesel engine of the Linea is very good too, both in terms of refinement and mileage.

Airbags do not deply on a side collision

(unless you have side curtain airbags)

But yes, it is built like a tank, Hard to damage it.

Diesel engine can always be tuned to give more power.

cruze gives 12kmpl on petrol though the car is excellent.

No petrol cruze mate

But the car is much more than 1L than the budget. On road price would push it close to 2L, maybe even more.

I haven't seen a Rapid on the roads till date! Is this car officially out yet? Or are the preorders being processed?

Tones of them in Delhi too.

Saw a Rapid yesterday here at Surat. Looks exactly like the Fabia from the front.

Another 'made for India' car like the Vento?

I think you should consider the 2012 FIAT Linea... The car has improved ground clearance, brillaint on road presence and some how it looks good too. (May be I am biased but i really love the car)

Had the first generation Linea. Leavin the ground clearance issue a brilliant car... Very good car indded.

Vento and Rapid are the same cars besides the looks and features here and there. My Uncle got the rapid and i seriously think it does not look good. It looks like the Fabia from the front and the seats (like all skoda seats) are hard and not soft like they should be for brilliant comfort.

Verna: Brilliant features but looks cheap from inside clearly not 11L car.

Cant say anything for the chevy cars. have not tried tehm out as yet.

As the OP would be using the car on long journeys, Verna should be pretty much ruled out. Or if someone likes a boat ride!

For good highway manners look towards Rapid or Fiesta.

Not suggesting Vento because Rapid is indeed an improved Vento.

Nissan Sunny is overall a good car, rides & handles nicely though not in the league of Euros.

Rapide in my opinion. it sings VFM all the way....plus skoda considered premium brand here...in league with the vw.

I recently drove the diesel variants of the follwoing cars and here are my 2 cents:

Vento: I loved this car, its a typical no nonsense look and feel and is a cracker to drive. Love the interior quality.

Verna: There is a lit of kit on this car but feels very wobbly when going fast.

Linea: This is an absolute gem of a car. But After sales service may be an issue as is the case with quite a few owners.

Rapid: Similiar to the vento, but i've heard some horror stories about Skoda so will tend to stay away from the car.

Fiesta: Decent car but i hated the looks.

Sunny: This is a huge car and very decent to drive. However i didnt like the interiors much.

linea has horrible ingress at the back, second only to new swift dzire ,unless you are 5 feet 3" or less it will be an issue,it also lacks rear legroom at the back, despite have wheelbase advantage over the competition,(the older fiesta classic despite have one of the shortest wheel base is far more comfortable)

Sunny is a decent car,but service centers are very limited.

Last what i heard fiat is trying hard to improve its A.S.S so if one is in one of the major cities then linea should be a good option.

As far as FIAT is concerned, FIAT is going to open own service centres and dealership. Fiat caffee is the step taken in that direction and will be opened at other locations soon.

Apart from few niggles like AC issue, Rapid is going pretty strong though A.S.S of skoda is still a matter of concern. Its A.S.S is more of like FIAT A.S.S and depends lot on area/city.

I would recommend Rapid purely on merit for great engine with very good fuel economy.
