Nikon D40 with 18-55mm kit lens looks like a good choice for a entry level DSLR.. The experts will be able to put in some better suggestions maybe.:).

you could also go for the olympus 520 which has in body stabilization and i guess the canon doesnot but the lenses have it

@kippu Stop recommending Olympus cameras to the indian public. No one trusts any other brand than Nikon or Canon over here.

Great to hear that U have planned to move to DSLR...
In the budget U mentioned U can get a new and a used one both....
Well there is no harm in getting a Used DSLR...

New DSLRs

Nikon D60- Very good camera, with excellent color manipulation...Tough competitor to Canon 1000D..But some of its drawbacks are...
->Doesn't have inbuilt focus meter in body, thus U need to get a AF-S lens for autofocus
->Have only 3 focus points.....
->No live view....
Nikon had launched D3000 recently, it has 11 focus points, point rest to problems still exist...If u want a nikon, better to go for D3000

Canon 1000D - Excellent camera, wins the race of entry level DSLR...I dont think it has any drawback which could be counted down...U get everything U should get in Rs 25K..
Overcomes all shortcoming of D60...
U can explore whole range of Canon lens through it....

Other Options
Sony A200- waste to buy if Canon 1000D is already there,..
Olympus 520 - Olympus has it own lovers and buyers, those who have many zuiko lens....but not a good idea to go for a olympus if U dont have any of its lens...
Pentax K200 - Very good camera, canon 1000D competitor, but pentax dont have Indian market...

If U expand ur budget - Canon 450D, Canon 500D, Nikon D5000, Sony A350, Oly E650

Used DSLRs If U go for used one, U can surely get a better piece than a new one at same price, Some models that deserve a buy are...

Canon 450 - Really good camera, U can get cam+lens in 25K or less.....

Canon 40D - though it is hard to find a used one, but if possible it is among the best buy....

Nikon D80 - If U dont find Canon 40D this is a ultimate deal, U will surely love this camera....awesome one.....Will fulfill all ur needs.....

Hope this helpsssss

Woah buddy ! Where do you get your information from, Canons PR journal ?

Honestly the 1000D has the best sensor in the budget market hands down no questions asked. However a DSLR is not only about great picture quality, you have to use it quickly enough in the field and this is where the Canon falls flat on its face.

The Canon Rebel series have the worst ergonomics no questions asked among the budget DSLR cameras. The 1000D's viewfinder is the SMALLEST viewfinder among ANY APS-C sized DSLR camera ! And the grip is so bad that its not even funny. Its the first time I have seen people returning DSLRs just because they did not like the grip !

And the live view is a big joke ! Its so slow that its useful only in studio applications and nothing really else.

Oh and yes its RAW shooting mode is limited to only 1.5 fps and it lacks a spot meter ! A spot meter is what the pros all use and my cheap 10k Fuji S5600 had one but the Canon 1000D lacks one. Too many important features left out IMHO. The 450D removes all these limitations but the 1000D is severely limited to be a good camera IMHO.

Honestly I will agree to only your last point but not with any of your other points. They are all good cameras and have lots of plus and minus points.

The Olympus Zuiko lenses are some of the sharpest and best kit lenses ever made. They have practically zero vignetting and are sharp as nails.

The Sony A200 is the only camera in the budget segment that does not have any major shortcomings like the 1000D and D60. That is other than the shortage of lenses in India. But thanks to people like KMD and Fizzmall, getting stuff from the US is not a biggie.

@OP - Please ignore all the bias in our posts. I too am biased since I use a Sony DSLR so its best if you try a megastore like Croma or Reliance digital and try all these cameras before zeroing on one. I myself had already zeroed in on the Canon 1000D, but the grip was so bad and I found the viewfinder extremely small and dull that I discounted it immediately.

The Nikon D60 had IMHO the best grip & viewfinder among the three but the price was too high. The Sony was the cheapest at 23500 and so I went with the Sony only and I have not regretted my decision one bit. :)

________
I apologize for writing that Canon has no drawback [I wonder how I missed them]...
I agree with U terms like - Grip is bad [not too bad], Live view is slow [but it is obvious to get slow live in a 25K camera, atleast it has]....
Also lack of spot metering, on which even the canon regrets....

Not agree with U views about Viewfinder...
about 1.5fps - U get 3 fps in JEPG, it is obvious to get slower fps at RAW

Thanxx for Rectifying me...

About Sony A200 Even I had used A200 a little...
But then, if u go for sony, there is less choices for lenses by sony, until U manages for Minolta lenses for foreign...
Also, I dont find it to be a better than D60 and 1000D [personal view]...
Though A200 and D60 have nearly same sensor...

About Olympus

I agree that Zuiko has very good lenses......
And there is a huge fanclub of Olympus,,....
But Oly is using LMOS sensors only, which is smaller than APS-C...
And if U talk technically LMOS performs lower than APS-Cs
Moreover, they still dont have any larger sensor camera.....
Thus low light performance, and sensor's response is a issue with it......

Here is the comparison of Olympus E-3 much much costlier one than D60 or A200...
U can check the response - Compare cameras

^^ Hey dude no need to appologize ! This is a public forum and in India we all have the freedom of speech which we should exercise.

About the continuous shooting, most cameras will shoot RAW the same speed as it shoots JPEG, only lesser number of pictures are taken thats all. However in the Canon 1000D, it takes lesser number of pictures and it does that at a slower rate to boot.

And I still say the Canons viewfinder is the smallest. Here is a comparison - A comparison of viewfinder sizes - Neowin Forums (Check the Canon 400D as comparison as the viewfinder is about the same)

I agree with you completely on your views about Sony. The lens selection in India is rather low. But then again most people will go only as far as a kit lens + telephoto (70-300mm) type lens and stop there. In that case Sony has a twin lens kit that solves the problem.

About Olympus cameras, they use a smaller sensor granted. However its low light performance is pretty good.

BTW the Olympus E3 camera is much better than the D60/1000D and what not. Dont go by specifications alone. The ergonomics of the E3 far exceeds the plastic bodies of the D60 and 1000D. The E3 has a faster shooting rate, a far more accurate metering system and faster overall performance.

Oh and just to demonstrate the Olympus low noise performance, I have picked 2 snaps shot at ISO 1600 on a E510 from Touzeens photostream (#7 post guy). I hope he doesn't mind ! :(

Also Olympus cameras are generally lighter and still maintain good ergonomics however availability in India is a problem. So in that regards its best for the OP to stick to whatever is readily available for him.

@ above..

Surely E-3/30 is 20 times much better than D60/A200, and that is why costlier too....:ohyeah:
But if one solely compares the sensor, he does not get for what he pays...
But then sensor is not everything, that is why E-3/30 are much better ones...

@ Thread maker...

At the end - it is always better to go for the one which is readily available everywhere...

I remember how crazy I was for a Pentax, but later I came to know 1/2 of the camera dealers in my city had never seen a Pentax DSLR in the city market:rofl:

Thus go for a Nikon/ Canon/ Sony..
If Ur need is not more than 18-70mm and 70-300mm lens, no offense in going for Sony....
But if U want to explore more and more lens for ur DSLR think twice and thrice before choosing Sony....

I guess the upcoming Nikon D3000 will hardly kicking off Canon 1000D, Sony A200 and its own Nikon D60....
But it is just a prediction....Indian market ka kya bharosa.....

ragz people have given suggestions , its upto you to read more and check it out according to your needs and take an informed decision rather than wait for people to decide for you
