Best format to convert mkv files to

See recently having got an internet connection been downloading some hi-definition stuff.

The problem: Many of them are mkv files.

What I need :

1. A program to split mkv files to smaller pieces (so that they fit in single layer dvd's). I have seen mkvtoolnix as suggested.Is it the best or any better ones?

2. More important which tool can I use to convert mkv's to more popular formats like wmv or avi or mpeg. Remember I do not want too loose audio or video quality.

1. mkvtoolnix is the best out there.

2. No point downloading mkv if you intend to convert them to wmv or mpeg, it was encoded in mkv for a reason that you do not loose quality. You can also download HDrips in xvid or wmv format, but are very rare.

But then if I get a blue ray player tomorrow will it play the mkv files directly.

Second the choice of players are very limited

Only vlc is decent in windows.

Wats the use downloading mkv's then???
simply split the mkv's..dont convert them..

Use km player..

Thanks for all the answers...So I will stick with mkv...

p.s On a side note..I am running out of hard disk space.....Downloading is a bad disease...makes you loose money
