Graphic Cards Best GPU for gaming @ 1440*900

Adept
Hi all,

I have been gaming on a 19inch monitor @ 1440 *900 with my 8800GT for the last 2 years, have played some 60-65 games mostly FPS and expect a few namely GTA4 and the deadly Crysis i have been able to play all the games at good framerates(60 and above) having all the settings maxed out. Recent was Splinter Cell conviction where at medium settings i was able to play @ 40-45fps, high @ 20-25 and max settings @ 10-15, ofcourse played @ medium settings as the other 2 were not playable.

Am a big fan of the GTA series and GTA4 is the best game that i have ever played:D:p but couldnt play with the max settings with my old 8800GT and the recent Episodes from Liberity City was able to run @ 30-35fps at low settings..

So can you please tell which is the best card that will play games at playable framerates for games that are to be released this year(Crysis2,F3EAR,Mafia2...) and the next year.

Am a big fan of nVidia but their recent 400 series make me think to look into the red side of the market - ATI but i guess most of the games have the nvidia logo(the way its meant to be played:hap5:) and even their Physx feature which is gaining ground (mafia 2 has the physx feature)am confused whether to wait for a better 400 series or jump on to the ATI wagonwheel.

So here it is, i want a GPU that will rock games @ good fps and should be able to handle games that will be released till 2011 end(i know its not a good idea to predict how the future looks).

My system specs are
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Mobo - Gigabyte EX-38-DS4 (Intel X38 chipset)
RAM - 2 GB DDR 2 800 Mhz Corsair XMS2 (planning to upgrade to 4 GB)
HDD - 1 TB and 2 500 GB
GPU - XFX 8800 GT 512 MB (needs a revamp)
PSU - Corsair 620W HX
Chasis - CM 690

Budget range 15-25K, currrently interested in Sapphire Vapor X 5850 that is listed @ 17k in itwares and mediahome.in and also MSI Twin Frozr 5850, listed @ 16,750 @ smcinternational

So please tell me whether can i get the 5850 or wait for nVidia to hit back or go for nvidia's 470

For that resolution anything more than HD 5770 (9K) is serious overkill.Even your current card is good enough to max out all games other than unoptimized ones.In my opinion don't get HD 5850, it is just too much unless you plan you get HD monitor and do get 1 more 2GB ram along with the video card.

+1 unless you get a HD moniter the 5850 is gonna be underutilized .... infact at that resolution your CPU takes more burden then the GPU ... you can probably get a HD moniter Plus the HD5850 vapor x for about 25k.

If you will absolutely not change your monitor, the HD5770 is all right. You can also get the HD5850, but it will not do much on your resolution, but yes better future proof. When heavy tesselated games come out (god know when), HD5770 will start to diminish.

at 1440x900, HD5850 will fart at the CPU everytime a game is started :p

Settle for a quality HD5770 like HAWX, or u can grab the HD5850 + 2GB RAM + BenQ G2220HD

first of all thanks a lot for all ur replies guys..didn't expect 6 in quick time :)

I have View Sonic 19inch vx1945 monitor, Viewsonic which i got in July 2007 and its not HD and so far no issues with it so currently no plans of getting a new one.

I thoguht of 5770 but to be frank i want to play GTA 4 fully maxed out (saw a video in youtube where it was running almost as smooth as in real life using a 5850, so fell in love with 5850:)) and also the upcoming ones Crysis2 and Mafia2

So from your replies and my system specs, I hope
5770 - I guess GTA4 and the big guns in Crysis wont fire that much
5850 - Guess will do the job
5870 - Better than 5850 but some 7k less than 5850 Vapor X
Also guys read that the recent drivers from Nvidia would let you to have a nvidia as well as an ATI card run parallely but again it was a bug in the driver.. so want to know is that any for any motherboard having 2 pci-e slots or for the recent mobos only featurng the icore or the newer amd chips.

HD monitor sounds good but since am not having any issues with the current one i didnt think of getting a new one

5850 it will last longer even if you use it only on that rez and it gives you the option to upgrade to a much better monitor or even play on a big full hd screen should you ever want to.

As u have a very good PSU why not get a HD4870 512MB GDDR5 ~ 8k (Before they disapperar completley off store shelves). You will be big jump from the current card. It will max out most games at that resolution.
Save the rest and then sell the HD4870 after 1 year or so and go for the HD6xxx series GTX5xxx series for 15-16k. They will have much better tesselation than current gen. DX11 cards.

OMG. Having a budget of 15-25K does not mean that the OP HAS to spend that much. For 1440x900, a 5770 should be able to play all the games at max and 8x AA, provided the CPU is strong enough. 5770~4870 (which I have). I can max out BFBC2 at 1440 with 8x AA with 40+ FPS.
OP, at taht resolution, the games are more CPU bound than GPU bound. So if you HAVE to spend all that money, here is what you shd do:

1) Get a 5770
2) Get a nice CPU cooler (~3K) and overclock the fkuc outta your processor (3.5 GHz +)
3) Get 2 GB RAM (~2500)

Total ~15K. Spend the rest 10K on some hookers or something or if you are not a nerd like the rest of us and have a GF, get her some gifts..... :p

Here is what you should do:

Sell following parts -

CPU - Intel C2D E8400 - 4.8k

Mobo - Gigabyte EX-38-DS4 - 4.5k

RAM - Corsair XMS2 2GB DDR2 800Mhz - 1.9k

GPU - XFX 8800GT 512MB - 3.8k

LCD - View Sonic 19" VX1945 - 4.5k

19.5k + 25k

Get -

CPU - AMD Phenom II X6 1055T - 10k

Mobo - MSI 890GXM G65 - 7k

RAM - G.Skill 2x2GB 1600MHz - 7k

GPU - Go with corelement's advice, pick up one of the 5850's on sale in this forum for 13k.

LCD - BenQ G2220HD - 8k

Now GTA IV will run smooth :p

thanks for your idea :DSidhuScorpion but i just bought this config in May 2008
CPU - 9k
Mobo - 14k
GPU - 14k
RAM - 4.5k
and monitor for 12k in 2007 so thats 53.5 k and since still some more juice is left in that config and me also an Intel fanboy:p, not quite interested in changing the config until the mobo or the cpu dies off

OMG:D i thought i would be the unique one in this forum but didnt know that i already have a gang of my breed here.. "Total ~15K. Spend the rest 10K on some hookers or something or if you are not a nerd like the rest of us and have a GF, get her some gifts..... "

If i had a GF :bleh:then first of all i wouldnt be playing GTA4 and thereby wouldnt have signed up in this forum searching for a GPU:):):p

Thanks a lot to all the guys for replying to this thread..and from your points i feel i am interested in getting the 5850(sorry for not going along with suggestions like selling the current rig, 5770, gtx465 etc..:))

Now from the Price Updates from Bangalore thread
http://www.techenclave.com/pc-buying-advice/price-updates-s-p-road-bangalore-137837-28.html
i could see that the 2GB Sapphire Toxic 5850 sells for 17k:huh:, i really doubt it but the member has confirmed it
" ..sapphire 5850 2 gb toxic card is Rs.17000 + taxes "

I am from Chennai and here 5850 prices are terribly on a higher side compared to the north..i checked with delta and the stock MSI 5850 starts from 16.7k (http://www.deltapage.com/) and they dont have Sapphire brand..

So guys please tell me which brand to go for and people having these brands please tell how well GTA 4 or Crysis play:p
1) Sapphire Vapor X 5850 -- 17k + shipping (from mediahome or itwares)
2) MSI Twin Razor 5850 -- 16.7k + shipping (smc international)
3) Sapphire 2GB Toxic edition if its avaiable for 17-18k:bleh:

and just saw that nvidia 460 is coming up in mid July, I hope 5850 beats the gtx 465,460 and the below cards by a good margin:ashamed:
