Hi,

This is gonna be my first foray into audiophile-grade headphones. I need something that is good for Movies and Games. I don't want closed cups as I want to be aware of doorbells and such :bleh:

Of course, I don't want anything that sounds too surgical/dry/flat. Some emphasis on bass response would be great and at the same time, with no bass-bloat.

My budget is around $250 for the headphone. If the headphone requires an amp, I could go for it as long the ensemble costs < $400. I don't really want to spend this much now, really, so if the phones can be driven without an amp and will sound decent, I can hold-off on purchasing one and get a good amp later.

As for the amp, if one is required, I will prefer a usb-powered one. Changing batteries on gadgets is not fun anymore

So far, these are the phones I think fit my likes. Anyone know where headphones can be bought cheap (that KMD can buy from, of course)?:

BeyerDynamic DT 990

Amazon.com: beyerdynamic DT 990 Premium Headphones: Electronics

BeyerDynamic DT 880-pro

Amazon.com: BEYER DYNAMIC DT880-Pro Headphone: Your Store

Audio Technica ATH AD900

Amazon.com: Audio-Technica ATH-AD900 Open Air Dynamic Headphones: Electronics

AKG K 701 (I heard it sounds too flat compared to others here)

Amazon.com: AKG K 701 WHITE HEADPHONES: Your Store

Sennheiser HD 650 might fit the bill but definitely not my budget! How about the Grados? And Sony?

AD 900 fits your needs.

It has the best soundstage of all of them which is important for gaming and also does not need an amp like the others.

AD900 if for gaming ,music and movies

DT880 PRO if for music and movies alone, its a bit above ur budget..arnd 300 $
i would say get the AD900, i own an AD700 myself , and trust me you cant wrong with 700 or the 900 series, great value for money . Wallhacks/Soundhacks for games, and great enough to satisfy an audiophile

Then it's the ATH-AD900 :hap2:

Any chance that it's available in India, esp. Chennai? The cheapest I could find is $250, sans customs+shipping.

nope.

you will have to get it through KMD or ebay.

AD900 is indeed the best unamped headphones out there, although with an amp or a DAC I'd place my money on the dt880 pro.
