Before I proceed further, let me make a confession: I am n00b when it comes to music. neither I have an audiophile's ear nor I have any knowledge about music scene.

I am thinking of catching up with the music scene and I am planning to go step by step. I heard Judas and liked them. I heard Slayer and liked them too. So now I am planning to step onto the pedal and cover metal scene as much as I can before moving onto rock (Dylan is great, Beatles OK) and Rap (Eminem is up there with Dylan as far as lyrics are concerned).

Back to the topic: Ah, the metal... so now i need to know ten top songs of Metallica which you think best represent the band.

I know top lists are always controversial but I hope after a few replies I will be able to shortlist if not ten than at least 12 songs which can give me a taste of Metallica :)

waiting for the lists...

One that i listen to frequently and think are good ones out of 'em are:

- Nothing else matters (the studio version is just great and the ending solo is brilliant)

- Metallica - The Unforgiven 1

- Metallica - The Unforgiven 2 (watch these two with video)

- Turn the page (just great :D)

^^ + Frantic, Am I Evil, For whom the bells toll, Sad but true, Devil's Dance, Seek and Destroy, Where ever I Roam....

not sure if they are Top 10, but these are definitely worth listening to.

Initial hits that caused the band to be popularized are

1. Enter Sandman.

2. The Unforgiven

3. Sad but true.

4. Nothing else matters.

5. Wherever I may roam.

Later on, there were some good mumbers that I liked -

Unforgiven 2, The memory remains, Turn the page.

Don't like their recent stuff though.

enter sandman

wherever i may roam

nothing else matters - the best imo

sad but true

turn the page

one

unforgiven 1,2,3

fade to black

master of puppets

i disappear

listen to Godsmack, iron maiden, slipknot, guns n roses

Most of the above mentioned songs are new albums. You can't call yourself a Metallica fan or claim to have listened to the real metallica, if you haven't heard the first 4 albums.

The first 4 albums were pioneering speed/thrash metal albums and are a must listen.

Kill 'Em All(1983) - It's their first album so the production is raw. Nevertheless some kickass tracks.

Tracks to watch out for:-

1. Seek and Destroy

2. Phantom lord

3. Whiplash

4. Hit the Lights

Ride the Lightning(1984)

Metallica started showing signs of greatness.

1. Fade to Black

2. Ride the Lightning

3. Creeping Death

4. For Whom the Bell Tolls

Master of Puppets(1986)

Godlike!

1. Master of Puppets

2. Welcome Home(Sanitarium)

3. Disposable Heroes

4. Orion

...And Justice for All(1988)

Dark brooding album. Songs get longer and much more complicated. Trademark riffs remain.

1. ...And Justice for All

2. One

3. Blackened

4. Eye of the Beholder

I have recommended 4 songs from each album only to give you a start. Once you start enjoying Metallica, listen to every song from the first 4 albums.

Each song tells a story and is a masterpiece in it's own right. For these 4 albums alone, Metallica truly deserves the title , "the greatest thrash metal band of all time".
