CPU/Mobo Best SLI mobo for 9800GT 1GB sli config & E5700 proc

Ok, i just got 2 EVGA 9800GT 1GB gfx cards in a good deal.

My existing system is,

C2D E7300 @ 2.66Ghz

Intel DG31PR mobo

800mhz DDR2 rams

Stock PSU that came along with the cabinet.

Now AFAIK i need to change a everything to go sli.

That means new mobo, new PSU, new cabinet.

Now my question is can i keep the same processer & mostly the ram's (DDR2) and upgrade only the mobo ?

If yes then which is the best mobo mostly under 5k-7k range (or max at 10k). ?

also which PSU will be most appropriate for this rig. (not sure of budget here..but the least expensive one, that will do the job.)

Budget?

First get a good PSU.

what resolution you game at?

If resolution is not high. Go for single card + PSU.

PSU- you will need atleast 450w PSU(read for single card). You can't go wrong with Corsair VX 450(cost 4.2k)

If you are going with SLI configuration:

You will need atleast 600W PSU.

performance: 9800GT SLI will not actually perform 2x9800GT's performance, so it will be better to get a good GPU instead of 9800GT, if you are looking for better GPU.

Also, you will need new mobo.

So least expensive will be:

Corsair 450VX 4.2k

+ 9800GT

OR better GPU

ATI 5770 ~10k

do mention your budget.

what about the mobo ?

Buget for mobo is under 7k max.

Budget for PSU is 8.5k max.

After some searching on other post for current prices narrowed down PSU to:

FSP EPSILON 80/85 PLUS 700w @ 5975 + shipping

Cooler Master Silent Pro M 700w @ 7650 + shipping

Corsair 750TX @ 7716 SHIPPED

Corsair 650HX @ 8250 SHIPPED

Corsair 850PX @ 8236 SHIPPED

Tagan BZ700 700W Modular Power Supply @ ~7800 + shipping

Tagan TG800-U88 BZ Power Supply @ 8500 + shippng

Tempted to go with FSP for its low price... ppl plz shed some info, pro-cons, what i shoud do.

1st have you already purchased the 2nd 9800GT for SLi?
If not then u'll be spending bout 14k for mobo + 9800GT.by adding another 2k or so u'll get the ATI HD 5850.IMHO its better to get a single HD 5850 than 9800GT SLi for the sole reason that 5850 will perf better in DX11 games as compared to 2*9800GTs in SLi.

also for PSU if u buy a single 5850 Corsair TX 750W wud be more than enuf.
But if u really wanna spend 8.5k on the psu get a CM Silent Pro M 850W for 9.2k.it has 6 pci-e power connectors. So even if u wanna SLI / CF 2 high end cards in future u wont need to change the psu again.

@hellgate i already have both the 9800GT's. I want the cheapest possible board that does the job (SLI). 7k is just my upper limit.

But PSU i want get a future proof one as i wont be changing that any time soon, even if i upgrade my rig.

it can easily handle 2*9800GT..

But i used the MSI power calculator and i was showing a max of 680~695 watt usage. I know that its the peak/max consumption of all units at once, but just to be on safer side+futureproof choose to go above 650w

^^

Well he can OC that E7300, if he gets it to 4, then he is good to go. One can always even out the imbalance...!

to take it to 4GHz, it needs a better cooler and that means extra price and not to forget extra heat generated and extra power.

He will have the power cause he will get PSU that will support SLI. Now just a matter of HSF and the board he is requesting. :) Highly better then throwing in a new CPU + new board.

9800GT SLi sucks, reviews show that too.

I wud rather u buy a new PSU like Corsair VX450W + Sapphire HD5770 1GB

EDIT:-

Get:

Core i5 i750 2.66GHz @ 10k

MSI P55 CD-53 @ 7.5k

Transcend 4GB DDR3 1333MHz C9 @ 4.4k

Corsair VX550W @ 5.2k

[quote name='ajinkyapatil']Ok, i just got 2 EVGA 9800GT 1GB gfx cards in a good deal.

Intel DG31PR mobo
That was a hasty decision IMO :p

Anyways, u can go for :

1. Corsair TX750 @ 7.4K to be future proof (Prime ABGB)

2. Asus P5N-D (750i) @ 8K (Delta Page)

3. Nvidia 680i if ur looking for a cheaper alternative

say 9k as ur budget

take this seriously m8 sell those 9800gt for ~3.5kodd here u will get additional 7k

now get urself a powerful gpu like 5770 as of now

+ corsair 450vx - this baby can guarantee handle dual 4850 so no worries its lot more powerful than its labelled wattage (personally tested it for more than a year)

at last waise no need to change the mobo now unless u wanna overclock very less diff u notice with the change in chipset from g31 to p45 etc @ stock speed... u can anyday bsel ur E7300 to run @ 333FSB and make it a 3.3ghz proccy fully stable with the stock cooler

u'll end up getting n saving a lot more than u expected

After reading this i am serious considering doing it. 450vx is fixed in mind and budget. Now just a question of Sapphire 5770 or 5850. Which is the best buy considering value for money ? I dont mind shelling out the addtional 6k for 5850 if its really worth it. When are the Nvdia DX11 cards coming out ? Are there any price drops eminent for 5xxx series ? any insider info ?

HD5850 will be even bigger bottleneck for your processor and I do mean it. If you want to go for HD5850 you better go for config overhaul.

in terms of VFM, HD5850 is better in performance per watt than HD5770 and if you get it from USA, it will be lot lot cheaper.

PSU: For HD5850, Corsair VX550W will be safe and for HD5770 VX450W will be more than enough.

nvidia DX11: Release date is set in March and yes, there will be a definite price cut from AMD then.

n you haven't yet answered : what resolution you game at?

why did you purchased 2*9800GT's, though you knew you will need better PSU and a new mobo?:S
