what is the best software to covnert video files so that the sizes of the files( like XVID files.. 1.4 GB) reduce to say 1 Gb or less..

Softwares i personally use
1) Megui [Highly tweakable, uses avisynth. For advanced users]
2) RipBot 264 [ U can make mp4 files out of this to play on your dvd player/XBOX/PS3 etc)
3) Any Video converter (One click solution, freeware)
4) AviRecomp( If u want to reduce size to avi files to say 800 MB from 1.4 GB. This is an awesome piece of software giving high quality)
5) AutoGK
6) MediaCoder
If the audio is AC3 in the 1.4 GB rip, try to compress it to mp3 further reducing the size. Hope this helps

Though i agree with sohancool but have been experimenting with different softs and i can suggest Divx pro is one of the best hassle free software to compress videos. i have compressed a 1.08GB movie file to 586 MB with out much quality loss using Divx Plus HD encoding option. You can get it from Here
