...in chennai (~2.5K)? Which one to go for. My plan is to run two of those in raid0. I'll also need a 80GB drive for my OS. Seagate 7200.10 sata II drives are no where to be found in ritchie street. Delta only has a 300GB version. Anyone that haunts these streets, please let me know a good model and where to buy it.
thks.

I don't know about high speed 120GB drives. If they are available, please advise on them too.

I like the Hitachi 160GB SATA II HDS721616PLA380 single platter drives ... I like them so much that I bought 4 of them. :) Really fast and cool running. Cost me around 2.6k each.

Then hitachi it is. I need to know if this is the t7k160 model (HDS721616PLA380 is quite a mouthful to ask around). Can anyone know if this is available in chennai?

Also, what about a good 80GB? Again, I cudn't find any 7200.10s of this.

NOPE ... it is a 7K160 ... no "T" in model number ... BUT it is in fact the latest 160GB drive NOT an old model :) The reason I gave the long number is because that is what is written on the HDD's label. :) I think Hitachi also have a 80GB HDD in the same series 7K160 which uses only one side of the single platter.

I too could not find the Seagate 160GB single platter 8mb cache HDDs in Mumbai - only the 2mb cache drives were available at that time - and like Hitachi have named their new 160GB with the old name of 7K160 so too have Seagate named their new 160GB single platter HDD as a 7200.9 :) This HDD is a very slim one - only 1" high !!

check out the Seagte HDD in attached page....

^Thanks for the info.
So, is this preference list ok? :

1. Hitachi 7k160 (HDS 7216 16 PLA380)
2. 'Cuda 7200.9 (ST3 160 811AS)
3. Hitachi T7k250 (HDT 7225 16 DLA380)
3. 'Cuda 7200.9 (ST3 160 812AS)

One of them is bound to be available.

@Sirius

Why is the "QUOTE" button missing from your posts ? :)

Your list....

1. Hitachi 7k160 (HDS 7216 16 PLA380)
2. 'Cuda 7200.9 (ST3 160 811AS)
3. Hitachi T7k250 (HDT 7225 16 DLA380)
3. 'Cuda 7200.9 (ST3 160 812AS)

The T7K250 HDDS are now a bit dated now - I am running 2 of these right now and they show their age in HD Tach - get around 55mb/s compared to Seagate 7200.10 68mb/s and the Hitachi T7K500 65mb/s. I have heard that 250GB HDDs are also available from the T7K500 series - these should be a better buy then the T7K250's.

I have a 320GB version of the T7K500 series - very fast and cool. The number in a Hitachi series indicates the largest drive made in that series - for example in the T7K500 the largest HDD is a 500GB and the 320GB HDD is called a HDT725032VLA360 which translates to

72 = 7200 RPM
50 = 500GB largest HDD in series
32 = 320GB the capacity of this HDD
3 = normal height 3.5" HDD
6 = 16 mb cache (or 8 mentioned for 8mb cache)
0 = I think this or the "A" means SATA (not sure)

theXfactor has put up a FANTASTIC post in TE giving full details of all makes of HDDs - search for it if you need details of the Seagates and Samsungs.

@Eazy
IDK about the quote icon. Your browser prolly didn't load the image. But, then again, if it didn't appear in my posts then it must not've appeared in any other posts :S

Found this recent article in xbitlabs and am waiting for part2:
X-bit labs - Battle for 160GB: Hard Disk Drive Roundup Part I

Anyways, I asked around ritchie and the 7K160 is selling for ~Rs.2,400 - Rs.2,500. Haven't checked any 80GB yet.

And here's the thread you pointed out, thanks:
