In fact, thats what I'm doing right now :P The growth potential is much more in a smaller company. And generally, the quality of work is much better too. Plus, in the bigger companies you tend to get lost in the crowd. I'm speaking from experience.

Big company also means learning the process of development and dealing with many kinds of 'peoples'.

Most important doing better coding (with peer review in place). Small companies always miss that as there are not enough resources.

Its alright to choose a renowned company for average pay for the first 3 years... After that you need to be open to share your experiences and lead teams in lesser renowned companies for better pay...
you dont want to just learn all your lives...

Own company over anything else.

Else whichever company offers the best profile irrespective of the pay

You should be careful(you might already be but just a warning in case you weren't) about taking into consideration age and experience profile if you want a meaningful survey. The answers will vary otherwise and be quite meaningless.

exactly...was trying to make the same point here. I'm gonna be working for myself in few coming months. Been leading a team at a company. Development team is small. Unless proper policies are in place, its difficult to force people away from their coding style and follow some standard.

the survey is not realistic. usually bigger companies pay more. How I wish the choice were as easy as you've made it :P

Of course there are those who seek bigger companies because you get better marriage prospects , and cant work anyway :P

2nd choice is good...but gaining few years of ex in a renowned company....so i voted for first considering current situation :D

What would you prefer
A) Very much renowned company, OK position and marginal payout.
B) A less renowned company, a Good position and Good payout.

Problem with this question is it does not take experience into consideration.

Genrally speaking, ppl with less will opt for A, as they are looking to prove something and therfore don't mind being a mere cog in a bigger machine & vice versa.

In the tech business or even most others, who you work for (disregarding politics) matters less than how valuable ie responsibility of the work you are doing ;)

4) Lost in crowd

Some eye washing facts of large corporates
>Free Time ?? - What is it, You may have to even work on holidays. Late nights sessions are actually necessary to handle the daily pressure.

>Foreign Trip - Only if you are on the side from where the company is earning. Though other division seniors might strike luck once a year to get a foreign trip.

>Hot chix - I'll keep it secret !!!

>Big Companies pay more - But to be at the level, you may have to spend endless nights + In contrast small renowned companies do pay a package difference @ 10-20% max.
Cheers

^ you have to look out for small companies following agile/xtreme programming methodologies with concepts like individual contributors.

Perfect setup for exploitation.

Also imagine a scene at an interview:
Interviewer: What is your role?
Me: Team lead
I: how many members?
M: 2 (including me)

Way i see it, work 2x more for only 1.2-5 times as much.
to impress that all important future f-i-l

vs parity for both work & pay :)

naturally there's exceptions, if you are able to find them

A less renowned company, a Good position and Good payout for sure. There is better learning opportunity as a person will be required to do many tasks. In the long run it proves better if you are planning to jump to very big companies like MS or Google.

Seriously, I value responsibility more than team size.

Ofcourse, I dont deny that offers frm startups have to be reviewed with careful consideration.

A better poll would have been "More money but shitty job, horrible peers, boss" vs. "less money but job you like, friendly peers etc."
