What processor ( Either AMD or Intel) are better than the i3 currently and in the same or lesser price range?

Ofcourse the PII X2 555 and AII X4 630. Both are better than i3, but i3 is just too power efficient.

Both are of different league, so you cant compare.

i3: runs too cool and is extremely power efficient, and a good performer too.

PII X4: great in multithreading, and no other proccy in its class can beat it in multithreading performance.

PII X2 555: Great performance for its price, and its a monster if unlocked, and has very high chance of unlocking once u have right BIO on a 770/785/790/890 mobo.

It all boils down to your needs. If you intend on gaming, then an i3 is good to go. If its multithreading, then X4 630 will be better. If you have an ACC enabled mobo, then go for X2 555 and unlock to PII X4 B55, and it ll beat all those by big margin.

It boils down to what u'll be using the PC for. If its mostly single threaded apps, get the i3 530 and a good mobo and OC the proccy.
But if u work with a lot of multithreaded apps then either get the X2 555 BE or X4 640.
U wont go wrong with any of them.

core i3, if i am right, costs around 5.8k. And at this price, my suggestion would be either Athlon II X4 630 or Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition. Both these are inside 5.5k and trump core i3 without much effort (though Athlon II X4 630 may lag behind in gaming till more games optimized for quad cores come out).

^^

but without unlocking the PII 555, i3 530 is better in multitasking with its HT.

IF u can get a PII X2 555, and a ACC mobo (anything with SB710/750), then just unlock it to a monster. It will be exactly same performer as a PII X4 965BE, except that the original X4 965 will oc slightly more. (4Ghz+).

So after unlocking, it comes close to the i5 750, and i3/AII X4 are miles below.

And 90% of the users are able to successfully unlock the cores on X2 555.

But you shouldnt assume that the OP would be able to successfully unlock the cores.
Without unlocking the i3 is faster than both the Phenom II X2 555BE and the Athlon II X4 640 in games & apps and overclocks better.

The Core i3 will run cooler too.
So if you can unlock the Phenom (which is very easy) then you should go for it but if you are scared of BIOS'es then stick to the i3.
Both are goo processors and will give you good gaming performance.

Ok I don't know the unlocking processes because I have been stuck with a terrible Pentium 4 for like 9 years now.

I assume unlocking will void the warranty? If that's true then I probably would not take the risk. i3 is good enough for a number of years right

it wont void warranty, and its not permanent too. You can revert back anytime by turning off ACC in BIOS.

BIOS flashing is just a piece of cake and is not more complicated than installing a game, and everything can be done vie windows itself. If you are really lucky, you wont even have to flash bios. But the performance gain you will get is just awesome.

The place where i buy the pc, They won't do the unlocking right? :p

Hmm how much is the PII X2 555 Black Edition in India?

And how much would the combo of the proccy and mobo be?

And I was reading about the unlocking of the Black Edition and they said there are chances of it not working and blowing your Card...

^^ Yes, mostly the so called "hardware engineers" don't even know this unlocking stuff. But you can ask them if they know unlocking or not.

Both the mobo and proccy could cost you around 10k. Ask other members which mobo to go for if you are buying this PII X2 555.

My advice to you is that if you don't know how to unlock or don't want to take the risk then you better go for Athlon II X4 630.

555BE cost 5200 ...
i would say go for it as if u r lucky like me then u can unlock it to quadcore [very easy to unlock]

i was in same situation 15 days bak and i took a chance if it does not unlock for u then also there is not much of a difference between the 2

this is a gamble worth taking .... any way choice is yours

Check prices here> http://www.deltapage.com/

PII 555: 4.9k

X4 630: 4.9k

i3 530: 5.4k

You can unlock the cores from mobos starting from 3.8k.

Cheapest option is Biostar TA785G 128M : 3.8k . Its a good stable and OC friendly mobo. But features are minimal.

For DDR3, Asus M4A78LT-M LE is a good option for 4.4k. Its 760G mobo, but has SB 710 with ACC and can unlock cores too.

Iam in the same situation as the OP is

I need to decide between core i3 and xII 550

i donno any thing about the unlocking thingy

but would sure learn about it after i get it

i planned to the get the below config (siggy) but things didnt worked out as i wished)

so decided to get a cheaper i3

even heard that amd motherboards are cheaper

^ Good AMd motherboards are not exactly cheap........but definitely cheaper than intel.

GEt 555 + 785/790gx brd.........unlocking is not a big deal.
Dont go for 550!

Big advantage of of amd over intel i3 combo is the 785/790gx chipset.......will play most games @ 1280X 1024 incl crysis.

Intel offers are worth considering only after core i5 and above
