Storage Solutions Beyond Blu-Ray: 2,000 movies on one disc

Just as we were all getting used to watching movies on Blu-Ray, Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia has developed a DVD that holds 1.6 terabytes of data — or about 2,000 movies. There is nothing like having your entire movie collection on one disc.

All this is made possible by adding a fourth and fifth dimension to an optical disc. By doing this, a range of different colored wavelengths can read the same physical location. Current DVDs use a red laser, while Blu-Ray DVDs naturally use a blue laser.

Researchers at Swinburne University say that a commercial release is still five years away, even though an exclusive agreement has already been signed with Samsung.

But will the everyday consumer need such a huge optical storage medium? Just think about the potential price of just one disc, let alone the player. The steeper price of Blu-Ray discs and players have hindered that technology from gaining a large share of the DVD market.

With hard drives exceeding 2TB and the future of movies heading towards digital downloads through services such as Netflix, the future of DVDs, especially Blu-Ray, may be in peril. On the other hand, you always will have the people who want a physical disc with a case and artwork so they can proudly display them.

Does the thought of having a 1.6TB disc excite you with its possibilities? Or do you cringe when you think about yet another new format that might force you to go out and buy “The Terminator†again for the fourth time?

Blu-Ray is in itself still a not-so-popular technology that will take years to become common. Now this newer technology. Don't know what the potential uses to the common man would be, but one thing.... if one such disc is damaged, your entire collection of a lifetime is gone. I would prefer individual DVDs. At least right now.

One single scratch will wipe 50-60 movies :P

LOL, i was jus about to say that.

this isn't exactly related but a friend's 320gb barracuda 7200.10 just developed bad sectors all over the disk. i've lost close to 300gb on that. i was able to partially recover some files and recheck and redownload the bad pieces with bitttorent but the rest is toast.

so the bigger these storage solutions get, the more risky it is. changed my mind about getting a 1tb now.

The above is so true... I have a divx and a dvd copy of batman begins.... and 3 different HD prints...4,9 and 24GB copies... already 5 copies of batman begins...
I have now stopped counting the number of prints I have for matrix:)...its started with VCD, then DVD, then divx, then 8gb dvd, then matrix collectors edition, then 720p, then 1080p then a higher bit rate 1080p:S

1.6 TB = somewhere between ~32 and ~70 Blue Ray movies
1.6 TB = somewhere between ~200 and ~400 DVD movies

Where are you guys pulling 1.6 TB = 2000 movies from?
The movies would have to be pretty compressed (low quality).
You speak nothing of compression in this piece.
You only speak about Blue Ray and DVD discs.

Please compare apples to apples.

Technology never ceases to amaze me. :)

That's assuming a 700MB movie. How can you expect 2000 Blu-Ray quality or DVD quality movies on it? :P

That's still a lot of space we are talking about. Although price will again be a major factor, not to mention format wars. ;)

I guess Optical Media technology will soon have its own 'class'. DVDs for the poor, Blue Ray for the middle class and these 1.6TB for the filthy rich!!!!!!

700 MB movies are meant for 15 -17 inch monitors,a HD movie can go upto 25 GB , already 1980*1080 is becoming a monitor standard on which 700MB looks crap ,5 yrs from now trailors of movies at youtube gona be > 700MB

Blu-Ray has hardly penetrated India. It will take a lot of time till HD becomes a major standard out here. It's just like adopting DVD's when CD's were popular. Downloading high definition content, again, is a huge task. ;)

Blu-Ray is beyond reach for a common indian right now.

and it will take more time that DVD to be accessible to all.

if any other format comes better than blu-ray then price may drop suddenly.

1 Blue ray= how much Floppy :P
