Laptops Blasphemy! Dell cheaper in retail than online!

Party Monger

Innovator
Hey guys was configuring a laptop(Inspiron 1525)
The online price came to 47500 approximately after taxes..
And the dealer quoted me 42500 for a similar(rathe SAME) config..(He gave a alist of BARE minimum specs, so include a bag etc..)
Im sure can stretch him to 40k if i haggle enough..
But the important thing is, Why is this other way round?? Intead of the direct selling being cheaper??
Is dell trying to loot innocent customers??:@
Is this why the raised prices recently??

nothing new in this.. the rates on the dell site have always been higher regardless of the pricing they offered in retail.

they have always had better prices when the customer has negotiated/bargained with the customer care reps on the fone..

now that they are offering stuff through proper retail channels its just happening more out in the open

But 7k difference??

That was never there..have purchased my self from dell..i was able to get 5k abter haggling my guts out on a similarly priced config!!!!:@
And then ther's the 15days(still no guarantee) delivery period..

dell online might have octroi, taxes, and many other invisible gains mixed in with the price.. what type of service is offered by the dealer.. match it online i'd say..

as per some news dell is cathing up real fast in the indian market. Mr. Michael Dell believes in ASS very much. I mean after sales service, hence all the popularity. Dell ASS is best.

@stalker im not talking abt monitors, im talking abt these laptops..You haggle and can get the same rate almost if u try calling dell for the monitors..But this they wont buldge on the rate by more than 2-3k..

And even i unsuspectingly was gonna place an order in a few days..!!!

Dell wil provide the after sales..
Wil check the dealer on monday..This particular one and few others..
The thing is why try and catch/loot unsuspecting customers??:@
Hell i was soo confident, that i didnt even look at the rates for dell in the catalogue..:ashamed:

i faced a similar situation a few days ago.. a new PC/Laptop showroom has opened up near my place (which isnt a hub for eletronics)
They're retailing DELL and the guy was offering a good deal on an Inspiron compared to the online pricing, though i cant be sure of all the specs..
But he wouldnt recommend dell saying that it has poor ASS..

The main problem is that these guys are offering rates on laptops that the dell online will never give..And they provide goodies from their side too..Laptop bag and pen drives and stuff...

@Vinchu

Dell by far seems to have a very very good rep for sales and service in India.

dont hesitate if thats what's holding back your purchase.

I'm not a big fan of dell ASS either. In the bigger cities, it might be good , but not so everywhere.

A tvm dealer was selling dell, but said that they wouldnt be supporting them, and that we'd have to call the number on the website for anything

A friend who boughta laptop in b'lore had the disk go kaput, and dell said that the service center was in ernakulam, so it might take a while.

I wonder what happened to the dell business model when it came to india. I thought dell achieved lower costs by selling direct via the internet and telephone , and here it's the other way round . I was seriously WTF the first time I noticed it. But i guess in india dell is just another retailer like acer , hp, or lenovo.

^From what i have experienced, They simply mail the part to your place, and there engineer comes over and replaces it in front of you..They have given the service contract to companies like wipro and unisys..These are the guys that come over..
And calling the number and all is fine i guess..In situations where ur laptop has gone kaput, the last thing you would want is to roam around the city with it..and later do rounds of the service center..

to be honest , Its a bit inconvenient for me to wait for a technician to show up. I prefer dropping the stuff off at the dealers and picking it up when its back in action. Sure most folks would prefer on site service , but i prefer it this way-I can make it fit my schedule :P

Of course it depends from person to person..But having your thing repaired in front of you..another experience..:)

Now lets get back to the cost part..
Has any one seen similar pricing in their city too??

errr...greenie, read up :)

The direct selling model wasnt really working anymore and dell got pushed back from the lead in laptop sales, hence the attempts to rejuvenate the company which included bringing back Michael Dell as CEO too.
Dell has basically entered retail all over teh world last year, not only in India :)

^^ I know dell is going retail everywhere , but elsewhere , the internet prices are still better /match the retail prices. Its only here that its the other way round , and cases like the OP said happen. Forget brick and mortar shops , when another online retailer can sell it for cheaper than the pioneer of online marketing , something somewhere is clearly fooked up :P
