Blender is a 3D animation program released as free software. It can be used for modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, water simulations, skinning, animating, rendering, particle and other simulations, non-linear editing, compositing, and creating interactive 3D applications. Blender is available for several operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, IRIX, Solaris, NetBSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD with unofficial ports for BeOS, SkyOS, AmigaOS, MorphOS and Pocket PC. Blender has a robust feature set similar in scope and depth to other high-end 3D software such as Softimage|XSI, Cinema 4D, 3ds Max, Lightwave and Maya.

Blender 2.46

The work of the past half year - also thanks to the open movie project "Big Buck Bunny" - has resulted in a greatly improved feature set, now released as Blender 2.46, the "Bunny release"!

This version supports a new particle system with hair and fur combing tools, fast and optimal fur rendering, a mesh deformation system for advanced character rigging, cloth simulation, fast Ambient Occlusion, a new Image browser, and that's just the beginning.

Blender is a free open source 3D content creation suite that can be very competently used in full scale animation movies.

Its not a "blending software"... Please change the title.

My brother who is in an animation school told me that students there make project in pirated maya( or any other expensive software) and then export it in Blender to make it look like it's not being made on pirated stuff. Hope they try and actually use them.

P.S.

And why do these animation schools teach with commercial softwares? Are students expected to 1) Pirate everything?, or 2) Pay for the softwares apart from their fees?

Either way it's not fair when free open source alternatives are available. Same applies to all kinds of school and Colleges teaching with commercial softwares that cost a bomb.

well no need to change the title - "blending" can be the new hip slang term that is all the rage with 3D loving kids today :P

Vishal, the title is misleading... Blender is much much more than just a blending/morphing software.

Its a complete 3d package.

Hey, Thats cool software.. My sister is Animator, she has Maya and 3Ds max license but, I will refer this one to her :)
