Was thinking of getting started with Java. So can you guys sugget me some good books for the standard edition. It will be really helpful if the book additionally cover up the GUI part (Swings) in detail.

Book should not be too tough since I am new to Java :p
TIA .

Head First Java.. and then if u wanna get some deeper understanding and a book for reference, get Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel...

I have all three viz Head first Java, Herbert Schild's complete reference and Thinking in Java... IMHO the complete reference book is not good... u cud be better off printing the api docs than buying it... on the other hand, the other two books teach u java along with its uses.. something that u can relate to when u are coding later on..

^^Well Python would have been my first choice, I'll be in touch with it. But considering how close centered colleges are I am stuck with Java :p

Well Java ain't that bad either ? :p Or is it ?
