Hi guys,
Please help me out here. I want to buy a HP DM1z. In India it sells for ~25k with 2GB of RAM. In US it costs $420 also with 3GB. Considering this huge price difference (6k + 1 GB ram) I have convinced a friend to get one for me next month.

The thing is he has a laptop already and as per my understand you're allowed only one laptop. So here is what I need to know.

  • Is there any exceptions to this rule ? Can it be applied to my situation (seeing how the second laptop is only 11")
  • If his excuses (one is company laptop one is personal) don't work what is the worst case scenario? How much money can the custom people ask for maximum?
  • Should I be taking this risk?

Would strongly recommend you to stay away from from the deal.

Firstly, HP is highly unreliable, and the A.S.S. is worst of the lot. Notebooks/netbooks need warranty, so you're better off with an Indian one.

Secondly, the Custom issue. They can disallow the second laptop or charge upto 6k on the netbook.

Thirdly, Indian deals aren't that bad.

You can bring two laptops comfortably, most do. The company excuse has worked fine, and I am not aware of cases where people have forced to cough up for that.

HP Laptops have international warrnaty, as long as the laptop is sold in that country. Since the dm1z is sold here you should have warranty here as well.

That said I had a bad experience with an HP laptop last year, which i had got from the US. The screen died and since it wasnt sold in india had to send it back to the US for RMA. RMA process was fine though, got it back in three weeks, and HP paid for shipping both ways.

Bringing Two laptops can be tricky and although many people do get through, many don't. I had once bought two laptops with me and i was asked to justify by customs at Mumbai airport. I told them one is company and also i had all proofs like company sticker on laptop, company provided documents etc and then only they were convinced.

In worst case they may definitely try to charge the duty so stay away from the deal and also HP is not really a very good option too IMO.

Since the maximum fine would be 6k, I guess its worth the risk. I mean in the said case I would end up paying the indian price. Please correct me if I am wrong

I think the office and personal laptop reason works fine... My bro bought a Mac book pro and a some compaq along when he came some months ago and they didn't even question him as to why he was carring two laptops...

Just make sure he does not carry it in the box and puts it in the laptop bag and brings it along... Our scannners are 2D so if he places one laptop on top of the other and passes throught green channel they probably wont even know he is carring two laptops...
